Today's name of the day: Esther
WDYT of Esther?
Esther, for me, is one of those names where I like the idea better than the reality. It looks interesting, I've met nice people with the name, it makes me think of Judy Garland (specifically in "Meet Me in St. Louis")... but when I say the name, it doesn't sound attractive. I think it's just my accent.
Please rate my personal short name lists (the latter includes combos):

There is such a hot composition doctoral student at my school named Ed. Soooo attractive. Anyway, he's married.
Yeah.. But he brought in his daughter the other day. She was probably the most adorable child I had ever seen. I couldn't resist to ask him what her name was. It was Esther.
Oh, the emotions.

I love the name Esther, it's gorgeous. I have a 6 year old niece with this name, so I think of her and also Judy Garland in Meet Me In St Louis, as you do.
I think it's a beautiful name, though maybe it does sound better in languages other than English (I'm thinking it sounds less flat in French and Spanish). It was my great-aunt's name, though she went by Mimi. I believe the combo was Esther Anna Albertine, which is pretty damn cute.
I've always liked the combo Esther Jasmine.

How I view Esther varies depending on the time frame that I'm thinking of the name in. By itself, Esther is a lovely old fashioned name. It has a queenly aura perhaps because of the affiliation with Queen Esther, and I love the Persian meaning "star." However, when I think of Esther in connection with the period of the Protestant Reformation and early America, I tend to visualize a Puritan girl wearing a black dress and white apron with buckle shoes.
I've never found the name to be appealing. My stepsister's name is Ezster (she was born in Hungary).

I really like it, I just can't understand the hatred against it.
I agree. Maybe it's down to confusion with esters, the chemical compounds, though why people who can do chemistry that well can't spell is beyond me! And the heroine of Bleak House is a delight; much more interesting than Ada, which nobody seems to mind.
I don't love it, but I don't dislike it either. It's a name that I like more for it's rare-ness than it's actual sound or look.
I like Esther a lot. It isn't pretty, but it's one of those names that doesn't have to be; it has enough personality to make up for the lack of conventional prettiness.
It doesn't sound weird in my accent, as far as I know. :/

What is conventional prettiness? Utterly subjective on all accounts.
I am going to go out on a limb, and assume your talking about names like Sophia, Amelia, Olivia, and Isabella. Flimsy and vapid.
Trend city.
Esther is extremely pretty, even by classic standards. I love a capital E (red) followed by a lowercase s (sage).

I think that about Pearl.
I don't like it. the meaning is all nice and lovely, but.. somehow I get a crusty old vision in my mind when I hear it.
I agree. I like the idea of Esther and honestly, it should be a name that I like. But the sound is unattractive. I might like it more if it was a middle name paired with something more modern and more personality.
