Weird, considering pretty much every Laura I know is nice. On the other hand, there was a girl name Sophie who used to bully my brother in middle school. We don't really judge names over here. We do have some discrepancies in naming (for example, upper-class people are more likely to use traditional names, but they're far from the only ones using them) but overall we don't really think names reflect personality.

I've never met any horrible kids with any of the names on the worst lists. The names I wouldn't use because I know of too many 'handfuls' with them are....Brady
Brodey
Luis
Braden (those four are all together in one room. We've been ready for June since the first day of school.)
Lucas
Sean (many, many handfuls)
Mario (sorry mom, but being an only child is not a reason to not teach him no or stop kicking. Although, I now know why people kept asking me if Mexican families baby their sons.)
NathanIvy (oh, the drama. Especially when she doesn't want to sit by anybody at lunch, but there's no space for her to sit alone.)
ZoeI spend most of my working day in elementary school, and the kids aren't necessarily bad. They just have to be reminded dozens of times to sit down, more likely to have issues getting along with others at recess, or have some sort of issue (special needs or things at home).

Hah, Courtney! Legit, every single Courtney I've known has been an awful person.

Lewis is one of my favorite boy names, and it's on the naughty list!!I'm glad Amy, Emma, and Georgia made it on the good girl list; they're my favorite names. :)

Time for analysis here.Of the worst-behaved girls' names, three:Eleanor
Olivia
Lauracan be considered classics.Of the best-behaved girls' names, ten:Amy
Georgia
Emma
Charlotte
Grace
Sophie
Abigail
Hannah
Emily
Alicecan be considered classics.Of the worst-behaved boys' names, six:Joseph
William
Joshua
Benjamin
Ethan
Lukecan be considered classics.Of the best-behaved boys' names, nine:Jacob
Daniel
Thomas
James
Adam
Harry
Samuel
Jack
Olivercan be considered classics. So, obviously , parents who are going to be strict and hold their children to standards are more likely to choose a classic name for their daughter. Parents who are going to be lenient and subscribe to Dr. Spock's edict of "Feed 'em, love 'em, and leave 'em alone" are more likely to choose a non-classic name for their daughters.I'd have an easier time convincing myself of this if it weren't for the fact that I was a Dr. Spock devotee and chose a classic name for my daughter. With boys' names, the trend exists, but is not as strong, because parents of all types value classic names for sons as opposed to classic names for daughters.Does this sound good?

But the "best-behaved" ones are popular too, so that shouldn't make a difference.

I hadn't even read down to the nice list.
But really, it just kind of reinforces my feeling that the names are just so popular at the school in question that naturally there'd be a lot of misbehaving and wel-behaved kids with those names.

This was supposed to be under RoxStar's post, dang it.

I'm surprised David isn't here. I really like the name David, and I met 3 great guys named it too, but 70% of the Davids I met have been absolute assholes

Probably because there aren't many children called David. These names are all very common.

I once read an article with the same underlying theme... about how an excessive number of criminals have the names Wayne or Bruce. In the end of the article (which attributed their bad behavior to the name)... an Psychologist commented that it was far more likely that agressive men learnt aggression from their fathers, who probably liked aggressive movies, of which Bruce Wayne was the quintessential cowboy representation. It's just a more intelligent idea to say that dads who liked rough and tough named their sons after their idol, and their sons grew up too rough and tough for their own good.
The article you posted reflected trendier names in the "naughty" list and more classic names in the "nice" list (with a few expections). My guess is that parents who choose trendier names also choose trendier parenting methods that allow children to decide what they feel like doing instead of doing what the teacher says. Not that these methods are terrible all the time, but they certainly would rear kids who earn less stickers!

I would never think of the name Bruce as rough-and-tumble or macho in any way. It's indisputably masculine, but not hyperly so. Bruce Wayne? Maybe John Wayne, and lots of boys were named after him, plus the names John and Wayne were already very popular. Some author half-jokingly said there were an awful lot of serial killers named Wayne and Ricky Lee. A few Waynes, that I can think of, but no Ricky Lees. I do know of one Ricky Lynn, but that's it.

I meant John!!thanks for catching that. Haha, Bruce Wayne. I meant John Wayne. In the article I remember, Wayne was actually a quite common middle name for criminals apparently. I knew the first name fit in somewhere, and my brain went "Bruce!". (I have a very kind Uncle Bruce, so no idea why I ran with that idea).

Bruce Wayne is Batman

Lol! This whole conversation was very funny! Also Bruce has always been a very masculine name to me. When I think of Bruce I think of Batman and my neighbors son who is a stuntman, actor, and producer who is hunky. He also does a lot of travel, writing, and works for non-profits. He just got married to an Indian pop star. Bruce was born in 1970 so he's like 17 years older than me so I had a puppy dog crush on him.I always had a crush on him as a kid because he's one of those awesome adventurous people who has travelled all over the world who's also really caring. He doesn't just promote helping people he actually goes out there and does it. His home currently is in New Orleans where he moved after Katrina happened to help rebuild and then he stayed there. When I was a kid I was always good friends with his father who would give me candy and berries from his backyard when I came over to visit.https://c676132.ssl.cf0.rackcdn.com/Copy_(2)_of_Bruce-4e68e885e8452.jpg

Interestingly enough, my husband didn't like being named Jake as a child, because of how he associated it, being sort of a "bad" name. Which is weird, because Jacob is on the best behaved list? What?I think it is weird how we draw these associations, despite there being hundreds of people named some of these names on any given year. The slew of little girls in this area named Charlotte, Grace, & Emma... well, I guess their parents are lucky. ;)

could it be ...That the preponderance of kids in trouble who have these names is due mostly to the fact that those names are extremely popular in their school?
