What could you have been named?
I'm not sure where to post this actually. I have a name question for everyone, but of a more personal nature. Did your parents ever tell you if they had any other names picked out for you? Do you know what you would have been called had you been born the opposite sex? My parents wanted to name me Alexandre, or Christophe, if I were a boy. My father is French-Canadian, which is why the names would have had the French spelling. I love the name Alex, for both genders. My mother told me once that the name Amber for a girl was in the running too, but it was never used. I guess Desiree came along and they decided they liked that name better. Thank you, Neil Diamond! LOL So, what about you guys?

I would've been Kyle if I were a boy, though I think my mom also liked the names Cameron and Tyler. (I have two younger brothers and neither of them ended up with any of those names, so I guess they dropped them at some point, hah.) The other two girl names in the running were Kayla and Nicole, but Megan was the name that got picked out of the hat, so Megan I am. :P
I was almost Rachel Lynn or Jamie Lynn. If I was a boy I would have been Adam Roy.
If a boy, I was to be Logan John. Jessica Nicole was a top girls choice. My mom settled on Logan Nicole because she liked it better.
If I were a boy I would have been Vincent P. III. No middle name because my father was born and my grandmother said name him after his father when they were quickly baptizing him because he was very small. My grandfather had no middle name. He was supposed to have been Vincent Paul. Instead they name the next boy Paul and took the middle name Michael. They were supposed to have Vincent Paul and Michael Mark. There is no one with the name Mark now.
Besides Melissa the other choice was Marcella nn Marcie but they didn't want names with the EE sound at the end because our last name has that sound. Even thought my parents Vinny and Debbie both have that rhyming sound with their nns.
My sister was either going to be Allison, Lauren, or Laurel but my dad didn't like one of the L ones and I said I liked Allison because of Alice in Wonderland (It sounds like it is her name, Allison Wonderland). She now goes by Allie (another long E sound). She also could have been Vincent.
ETA: I also was almost Sarah Elinor after my two grandmothers.

Had I been a boy they would have named my Michael Warren or Michael Jon.
They liked the name Morgan, but were living on Morgan ave at the time and decided that would just be weird.
My mom got on a classic name with lots of kicknames kick so I ended up as an Elizabeth and my little sister is Katherine.

I have an Aunt Maria. I don't know what her mn is though. She is named after my great grandmother who was Maria Estelle and went by Stella. When they came to the US they changed her name to Mary. Because that was her legal name the people at the nursing home called her Mary even though she didn't go by it. I always felt sad because she would get confused and I thought maybe if they called her by her name Stella it would be less confusing.
My mom wanted to name me Carly, but thankfully my dad vetoed that. They also considered naming me Cara Rachel, but decided Rachel Cara sounds better. Interestingly, they went with the Rachel spelling for my name. If my brother had been a girl, he'd have been Steffi/Stefanie Rachael, with a different spelling. If I was a boy, I would have either been Craig Ian or Craig Evan.
My mother liked Clarissa, Trista, and Kristle for girl names, and Christopher and Carlisle for boy names. Interestingly, neither my brother or I ended up named any of these!
(I'm really glad I didn't end up Kristle, even though it would have suited me).

They almost named me Lynn, but in the hospital they decided on Moira. Both beautiful Gaelic names, in my opinion. I think Moira has a bit more character, Lynn seems a bit empty to me. i still would've been happy with it, though.
If I'd been a boy I would've been called Sam. I like Sam, even though it's very common.

My dad wanted me to be Sarah Anne, after his mother who had recently died. My mum wasn't about to name me after her mother-in-law but wouldn't admit it straight out, so just kept stone-walling and on viewing me for the first time announced the name of her choice; spontaneously, she claimed. Lucky for me - I find Sarah very dull, and I'd have had initials SAD too, just like granny.
I asked them once what I'd have been called if I'd been a boy, and they got very embarrassed and admitted that they'd never given it a thought. My guess is that Thomas would have come into it somewhere, since both their fathers were Thomases.

Streisand
You would have been ahead of the trends!! What with all the Jaggers and Marleys and I don't even know what else.
Streisand is actually a pretty sound, if you try to remove all the associations with it. And you would have had Sandy to fall back on ;)

The names that my parents were considering were:
Anita
Rita
Virka
Stasija-Ana (Anastasija broken apart, my mother's creation)
Rudi (My father's favourite name)
Virke (This is a unisex name in Estonian)
Johan
These are also the names my parents considered for my brother, but in the end I ended up being named Lia Ellen and my brother Peeter Johannes. They chose Lia because they thought it suited me best and Ellen is for my great grandmother Elfrida who went by Ellie. My brother was named after our great grandfathers both of whom were named Johannes, and the name Peeter comes from the name of the family farm in Estonia.

What is Virka/Virke from (or what does it mean)? It's cool!
I do know that in Swedish the word for timber/ wood is virke, but I am unsure if the two are related and I have not found any other meaning for the names.
My mother's family kind of assumed, without really analyzing it or acting on it, that she would name me Katrina, because she'd always had had one of her dolls that name when she played with them. Not always the same doll, but one of hers was almost always called Katrina.
My parents blessed me and my siblings with two middle names. Over the years they did mention some other options they were considering, and now I'm glad they chose what they did.
Bethany Hannah Brooke (can you get any more 80s?)
Stephen Alexander Montgomery - Sam for short
Stephanie Nicole Denise

The other names my parents were considering for me were Shelby and Stephanie. Sure am glad they went with Shannon! Although Stephanie is ok, I guess, but I don't feel like a Stephanie. If I was a boy, my name would've been Kyle. Shudder.
And just for fun, other names we were considering for our son (Benjamin) were Patrick and Lewis, and if he had been a girl his name would've been Margaret. Our daughter is Margaret. Back-up names for her were Genevieve and Annemarie. Never picked out a boy's name because it was too hard, but probably would've been Patrick.

Bonnie and Connie
Well, my birth mother named me (and my sister). She planned Heidi and Heather, but we ended up Heidi and Holly, as we were Christmas-time babies.
In any case, my step-mother (who raised us from infancy) always wanted twins and would have named them Bonnie and Connie. I hope I would have been Connie, but in any case, we were lucky to escape her naming style!
The doc originally thought we were triplet boys (old school technology!) and the names picked out were something like Curtis, Craig and Corey. Bio-mom was real into matchiness.
My dad always wanted to name us Zita and Allegra ("little girl" and "cheerful") as he is from Italy. He did get to name my sister Felicia ("happiness"). I totally would have loved his choices.

My parents considered Elizabeth nn Beth. They considered that before I was born and decided on my actual name before I was born, also. I never heard of a name picked out if I had been a boy. My mother never wanted a boy, so the failure to choose a boys' name was probably wishful thinking on her part, which happened to work out.
My mother often says, "I almost named you that!" It will be fun to see how many names I can recall were in the running for me.
Rhiannon - she loved Stevie Nicks.
Melia
Kelly
Maggie (May) - and Rod Stewart.
Daniel Joseph if I was a boy.
Megan was my father's first choice, but my mother thought it was too common at the time. It helped her case that a woman gave birth to a Megan in the same room my mother was in at the hospital.
This is all I can remember for right now. I'll post more if I think of any.

If I were a boy I would have been named Hugh or Robert - depending on which parent got their way! (Mum = pro Hugh, Dad = pro Robert "Robbie")
Other names that were in the running were Ruth and Rhona.
Actually, my dad told me the other week that if he'd had sole responsibility in naming me he would have gone with Aoife, Saoirse or Niamh for a girl and Lorcan or Rory for a boy. I wouldn't mind any of them.

My parents didn't really care about names; they didn't really obsess and plan about what my name would be. My name would've been Damian if I'd been a boy; it was the name of my uncle's friend, and my mother really liked the name. My mother's childhood Cabbage Patch Kid was named Edith, so that name was also a possibility. My father suggested Gemma/Jemma, and my mother really liked it. If only she'd spelled it "Jemma" rather than "Jema"...
I have a brother (Nicklas) who is three years older than I am. My parents had a girls named picked out for him, Nicole. But since he was a boy they decided to go with Nicklas. One of them wanted to spell it Niclas, and the other one Niklas. Nicklas is still a legit spelling though. They were throwing around Fredrik and Joakim as well.
When I came around three years later, they were still talking about Fredrik and Joakim. If I had been a boy, I would most likely have been named Fredrik. However, I'm a girl and they decided to finally use Nicole. My mom had started to like Felicia as well, but my dad said no. Felicia is one of my middle names instead.

Well had I been a boy, I would have probably been named James, after my dad, even though that's my sister's middle name since they thought she was going to be a boy. I was a surprise baby after 3 other girls so I don't think they really had anything in mind other than what I ended up being. I'm not sure how they came up with Kelsey (think my mom just liked), but Diane is supposedly after my aunt (but her name is Debbie, so I don't know. I think her middle name is Diane, dunno, don't like her) and Megan was a name my dad liked. My dad always liked the name Molly so if he had his choice, I would have probably been named Molly.
Girl: I should have been named Kelly Elizabeth. My mom went to visit her mom out of state (w/o my dad) and I was born during that visit. Even she couldn't explain it except to say that she was influenced by her brother.
Boy: I probably would have been named Joseph since it was my mom's fave name at that time.
BTW, I like Alexandre, Christophe and Desiree. :-)

If I were born as a boy my name would have been either,Bredon,or Bradon. My parents ealier choices were Camille(That ended up my middle name)That was to honor my Nani, who passed away before I was born. Then Sasha, thats about it if I remember correctly.
My male name was Konstantinos, which eventually went to my brother. My alternate girl first name was Zoë, which ended up my middle name. I'm named for both my grandmas, and I was always going to have at least one of their names. My parents also liked and considered:
Sophia (I was almost almost Sophia, but they wanted to honor both grandmas at once in case they didn't have another daughter)
Penelope
Kalomira
Georgia
Athanasia
Anna
Panagiota
Eleftheria
Names they liked but never actually planned on naming me:
Patricia
Michelle
Eleanor
Alice

may I just say that Katerina Zoë is a beeeeautiful name (even with the stupid pretentious umlauts) :)
Kalomira is too! Wow, I've not seen that one before. Do you have any background on it?

Thanks! I've grown into it, and the versatility of a "Katherine" based name for nicknames is nice.
Kalomira (Καλομοίρα in Greek, so you'll also see Kalomoira) is an older name meaning good fate. I think it's pretty too, but it doesn't feel very me.

If I had been a boy, they would have given me the name my brother ended up with-- Michael Gary, after two deceased uncles.
My mother also considered Jillian, but she said she didn't like the nickname Jill.

Aw, I happen to like Jill. It's retro (now) and simple, but sweet.
Though, I can see how it would have seemed ho hum a generation (or a few) ago.

I don't know what my name would have been, if I'd been male. However, the child born 6 years after me, a boy who lived only a week, was named Roderick. So that must have been a favourite.
Sonogram technology was not yet available when my mother was pregnant with me so she did have a name chosen if I was a girl. It was Melanie Marie.
But the boy name had not been chosen until later, as I understand. My mother wanted to name me Blair Leigh, and my dad said "absoltely not" (thanks be).
He wanted Dylan. Brandon was an alternative choice and my grandmother encouraged the choice, as I understand it.

I could've sworn I'd mentioned this here in the past but when I did a search I couldn't find it... hm.
Anyway, my parents had several names, mostly 'T', before they chose Tabitha. They were like, Tashiana, Tatiana, Tonya, etc basically I'm glad she went with Tabitha haha They never came up with boy names because they learned I was a girl early on.

I actually really like Tabitha too (best of those you listed, at least). Though, we considered Tanya or Tania for a long time ourselves.
Do you go by Tabitha, or a nickname?
Do you go by Tabitha, or a nickname?
I go by Tabitha most of the time. Tabby is something my parents, older relatives, and cousins usually call me. Tab is preferred by my sister and friends. Tabby Tabz is used by a few close friends and family members. Very few people use Tabby Cat-- pretty much just my mom and some aunts and cousins, i.e. people who've known me all my life and still remember that childhood nickname.
I'm cool with all of them, though if a stranger or someone I didn't know very well called me Tabby Tabz or Tabby Cat, I'd definitely side-eye them lol Don't know why, but those feel a lot more personal than the rest... maybe because the only people to really use those are the ones I've known all my life.

It took my parents a while to come up with a name for me; I went the first two weeks of my life without having a name. My mother wanted Dakota, my dad wanted Ripley. They both hated their top choices, so they compromised with Rachael, which was on my mother's list. If I were a boy, I was going to be Ryan. So, yeah...that's the story.
My Father was considering Tawfiq at one point.
I lovce initials that spell something!
My brother's initials spell EAR, which he hates.

My dad's real into cars, so it made sense. My SO's initials spell EAR- And both he and his dad are in audiology ;) his parents say it was accidental.
