You, and she, would be constantly explaining that, no, it was the tree, not Mabel. This would get very tedious very quickly; and anyway, I far prefer Mabel.

I like it, it's really a very sweet sounding name.

Thanks for the honest opinions. We have a Mabel in the family but not someone we see often but it was a concern it was too similar. We obviously can't use Mable but Maple seemed significant as we both love Canada and would move there in an instant if they wanted some Aussie teachers over there. Our daughter has Olive as a middle name which has significance to us as it is my mums maiden name and we wanted a girls name to be significant if number two is a girl. Thanks all.

Eh, I prefer Mabel.

Very Canadian! Useable, I'd say, only in the middle name spot.
Oak, Elm, Ash, Birch, Larch?
Actually, Larch on a boy is acceptable.

I think it's silly. And brings to mind so strongly the taste of maple syrup. Or maple anything, candy too. Not that I dislike the taste of maple, but I wouldn't like any name that brought anything to mind that strongly.

I like it. It's somehow lighter than Mable:0)

I think it's awful. For one thing it sounds an awful lot like Mabel, which I despise because it sounds like somebody's cranky great-aunt.
And it also calls to mind maple syrup which I don't much like.

Legit just asked my husband and mom this question last night. They both thought I was saying Mabel and it took a while to explain. However, the consensus was that it is cute-sy. That is, it makes you go "awww". I like it. As nature-names go, I think it is pretty and girly... but don't find it as strong as some others (like Meadow, Ash or Dawn) which convey a very specific feeling or image. Maple remind me of Autumn for sure, but moreso of syrup and candy. This may be because maple harvesting is a big thing around here though. In the end, I think it makes a unexpected and feminine choice. It might raise a few older eyebrows, but will bring a lot of smiles too. The confusion with Mabel upon first hearing the name is probably unavoidable, but that is not really a big deal. I would use it, if I didn't have other names that I adored.

I just don't care for it. While I like Mabel, Maple just seems silly to me.

I prefer Ficus. In all seriousness, I knew girl who went by Ficus. But it's not a good name and neither is Maple.
