suggest a name?
Hi everyone! I'm an Asian girl thinking of an English name for myself. Some preferences:
Unique but still easy to pronounce, nothing pretentious
2 syllables or more
Either gives a strong or neutral image (no gentle, dainty princessy names please)
Something that can be shortened to a nickname (e.g. Natasha to Nat, Amy to Ames, etc.)
Unisex/female (doesn't really matter)Some names I've considered:
Selena (from Selena Kyle/Catwoman, I'm a fan, haha. But doesn't really shorten well and I have a friend named Seline so it's a bit too similar)
Alice (Doesn't really shorten well either)
Rachel
Elena

Alice is lovely. It can't be shortened, but if you like it is that a real problem? It's certainly not unique or even slightly unisex though.Elena is nice, although I prefer Eleanor - it is more classic and can be shortened to Nora which is really cute and sounds strong.***
Some more ideas:
Carmen - strong image, can be shortened to Cara and is relatively unusual.Willow - Neutral and 2 syllables. Not so easy to shorten but could be Willa or BillieErin - can't be shortened, but is unisex and unusual (at least where I live!)Christian - unisex, but more unusual for women. In my accent it has 2 syllables but could vary on location. Chris, Christy, Tia as nicknames.Tamsin - Tam or Tammy

If you enjoy Selena and Seline, how about Sally? I used to know a Celine who used Sally as a nn, and it worked well for her. And Sal is cute!

Well, what's your real name? You can draw on that for inspiration, like I did (although I admit that my real name is European and easy to anglicize so it's less of a jump).
I like both Rachel and Elena. What about:
Katherine (or Kathryn, Catherine etc.)
Nicole
Frederica
Rebecca
Bailey
Julianne
Andrea
Alexandra or Alexis
Allison
Valerie

Eleanor -- Elle
Elizabeth -- Elle
Eliza -- Elle
Florence -- Flo
Irene -- Rene
Josephine -- Jo
Katherine -- Kat, Kate
Louise -- Lou
Margaret -- Mag, Meg
Nathalie -- Nat
Penelope -- NelI'd go with Irene. It's unusual, yet familiar, and extremely stylish, not too frilly, streamline, likeable, and easily shortened to Rene, Ree, Reenie. I'd just keep it as Irene, though. I had an Aunt Rene, and always thought Rene was pretty.

I think Selena has a lot of nickname potential : Elena, Ellie, Lena, Ella, Leni etc. If you want an English name I'd would stay away from Elena and Selena though, they give me a Spanish vibe, not English.Alice is my favorite girls name, but yeah..no nicknames. Don't like Rachel, but I guess you could go bu Rach or something.
Olivia
Danielle
Matilda
Alicia
Johanna / Joanna
Katherine
