What's the closest name to your own you'd use IRL?
On a child, I mean.I was watching a documentary where there was a mother and daughter named Karen and Erin. And then of course, the many examples of children being given the exact same names as their parents. What's the closest to your own name you'd get on your own progeny?

I think it's quite the stretch, but it's probably any Mi- names on my list. Still there's quite the gap between Michael and Mia.

I've always liked Catarina. That's what I picked, if any. (My name is Catherine.)My middle name is Ann. I like Anne, Anneliese, and Annika.

Samara or AlaiaAlaia is pretty rhymey.Samara is very similar sounding in that both names start with a Sa-, are 3 syllables, end in an -a and have a strong r sound.I wouldn't name a child after myself. I just happen to love both names.

I'd use my mn but spell it differently - Katharine.

Probably Camille. I like the nickname Cami, it's cute, and I don't mind Cam for when she's older.
Or Mollie, I'm not sure if Mollie is that close to Millie, but then I don't think Karen and Erin are very similar at all! So I'm sure it fits.

Alina. It has the same ending.

Beckett..My name is Rebecca, so Beckett for a boy is probably as close as i'd get. I quite like it :)My father and I share the same initials, which I love so if I had a son, I'd consider using R.S again.. but I like two middle names so it wouldn't quite work.

Maybe your maiden initial for the second mn?

Melissa happens to rhyme with a lot of trendy bad sounding names and sadly they are the only names that are similar. I'd probably go with Alyssa, since I absolutely hate Marissa and Larissa sounds very dull.
vote up1
Maybe Charlie (for a girl) but I honestly doubt I would seriously name my daughter that.

My name's Emma. I really like Ella, so that's the closest I'd go. I'm not especially keen on Emily or Emmeline or Gemma. Karen and Erin don't sound very similar to me because of my accent haha.

Well my fn and mn is Sarah Kate, so I'd be open to using Sadie, Zadie, Kate or Kaia. I particularly love Sadie and Zadie and because they sound different to Sarah, I think I could get away with it! That said, I would still prefer to use different names for a DD and then if any of my kids wanted to name one of their children after me they have more options! ;)

Geneve, but not with a form of Marie for the mn. Maria, or maybe I'd go Merry as a mn for a Christmas baby, from my mn.

My best friend growing up was Erin and her mom was Karen. Erin's middle name was Caitlin which is another connection to Karen. I think the closest I'd go is Katherine or Emmeline. Neither are very close but people always confuse Katherine with Caroline and Emmeline has the same ending. I've thought about naming a daughter Caroline as a kind of "girls can do this too" tradition starter, but then I'm like, meh, I don't love the tradition anyway. It's like "I'd like to have a child who's exactly like me, with the same name and everything, so that I may live vicariously through her!"

People do confuse Catherine and Caroline a lot. Says a Catherine with a sister named Caroline. :P

Agree. It's one thing to give a child a parents' name as middle name or to use the parents' middle name, but to give the exact same name does bug me. I like the fact that M is connected to me - and I like that I continued a family tradition. But I certainly wouldn't want a Haven Junior!

I might call a kid Katherine. Might. More likely I'd call her Aikaterine.

For myself, I like both Cleo and Zoe, and I'd use either if my partner liked them (I actually think Cleo and Zoe would make a cool sister set, but a Chloe, Cleo and Zoe in one family miiight be pushing it). I'd also use either of my names in the middle name spot. For a boy (or girl too, if I'm honest) I also really like Clovis. That's sort of Chloe-like.

Cleo and Zoe sound awesome together!

It's so art deco, isn't it!

If I could, I'd probably use Eliana, however, it's entirely too similar to my name and my dd's name (Anna). Way too similar there.

There was a day--slightly pre-Ben, I guess, since by the time we were naming him I'd decided I didn't like it enough to consider--where I would've used Sean. So that's like, similar. I wouldn't name my daughter Shawna though. I get confused for Shawna often enough!

I’ve considered Anja, as a way to honor my grandmother Ana (if my husband vetoes Ana-Sofia, Anika and Anastasia).

Tanja, Vanja and Sonja are the only others I can think of that are close and I don’t like any of them.

The only thing that is coming to mind for Kelsey is Chelsea. Which I've always hated (because people call me that all the time) and because I think it's dated. Kelsey is also unisex so I could be lazy and just name my son Kelsey too.

Alison and Addison (b)Addison would be about too close for comfort but I'd call him Addy (or maybe Adz) a lot

None of the names I like bear any resemblance to Brandon. I don't like this game. ;)
vote up1
You don't like Brandy for a girl?
vote up1
C'mon now.

I've solved your problem: Brandiegh - the ending makes it classssaaaaayyy.
vote up1
Landon for a boy?

lol
vote up1
What about Brenda? It's not exactly like Brandon, but I assume you'd like it a little more than Brandy.
vote up1
I was going to say.

Branhilda:)

Branhilda is dark, dark brown to me, like coffee beans. What color is it to you?

My name is Janice and the closest name to my own that I'd use for a child is Janine. Janine is, in fact, my eight-year-old niece's name, but I'm going to assume for the sake of this question that it isn't the name of my niece, as I would not, in reality, use a name that my sister had already used. I think it's cute and I like its retro feel. It's retro because its greatest period of popularity was the 1960s---on the other hand, it was never really popular, so it doesn't seem as tired and dated as names that were.

Probably Nicholas or Noelle. Doubt I would actually use Nicholas though, since it's very close to my brother's name.
And I wouldn't say that Noelle is close to my name (Nicole) but I couldn't come up with something else

I always thought Nicodemus would be a bold and fresh choice for a child. But, it would be a gutsy choice.
Colin, Colton and Driscoll would be quite similar too.
As for Nicole... I think that Colette, Colleen or even Annika might sound close enough to be matchy.
vote up1
I totally forgot about Nicodemus. I like it :)

Keva or CavanKeva Leonie & Cavan. My maternal grandmothers great-grandfather was born in the Irish county

I get called Max a lot, so I would choose Pax, boy or girl.

I gave my daughter my own mn, Anne, as a mn. My fn has a direct translation that I can't stand, and I wouldn't want to duplicate my own name exactly.I know a Megan whose mother was Margaret. And I knew a Maria Elisabeth Helena who was known as Marelna and named her daughter Marelna after her own nn.
vote up1
That Marelna tidbit is actually kinda cool.

I'm an Alison. I wouldn't use Alice, Alicia, or Alyssa. Alix would be ok. I actually love the idea of using Ada, Adele, Adelaide, Adela, Heidi, etc, since it's a connection, but subtle enough that only namenerds will get it.My middle name is Vanessa, and I'm willing to use that. Esther, too.
vote up1
I'd use Jessa or Jessamine.
vote up1
Neva. otherwise when I already did, using my middle name for my daughter's middle name.

Only Catriona or Cathleen for the Catherine variants, but there are a few rhyming names I would use. I think Valentina is gorgeous, as are Marina and Josefina.
vote up1
So it has to be close and I have to like it? :)As a Jodi, I'd consider Joash, Joetta, and Jobeth.
Also this isn't that close, but my full name is Jodi Rae and I totally would name a son Macrae.

I would definately consider a variation of HeidiJoy for a child. Adelaide was even on our list until a friend used it this past year.
Heida, Adelle, Adelheid and Adelais we have considered. My husband still has Adelyn and Adeline on his list. As for rhyming names, I seriously considered Haidee... but decided it was too close to Heidi. I do like Holly, Hayley and Harmony, which are pretty similar. But, I would only use Harmoney. There are really no boy's names that rhyme with Heidi.
Though, I have tried to convince my husband to consider Tullio or Tullia... which are related to his name, Julius. We also have Judith and Judita on our list.
vote up1
Ooh, I love Haidee! You're right, though; it is too close to Heidi.

Well, Starla doesn't exactly have much in the way of etymology or history behind it, so I guess I would need to choose a name that either sounds a lot like it or has something to do with stars.
tThe former: Carla.
The latter: Estelle.
Come to think of it, Carla Estelle, or Carly Estele, isn't half bad at all.

I watched "The Other Sister" a couple nights ago (don't reccommend, as I found it mildly offensive)... and the main character is Carla. After hearing the name so many times, I started to really like how simple and stated it was. Carla Estelle would be lovely. But, I think I would go with a different name that means star... like Carla Seren or Carla Astraia.
How about Marla to match Starla?

My name is Leah and I would have no problem using Amelia, but for some reason wouldn't use Aaliyah or Maleah.
