Names of the day, Grainne and Granuaile
Hello, everyone. Today's name of the day on the front page is Grainne. If I had been born in Ireland that would have been my name. I wonder what everyone thinks of it in general. Do you prefer the Grainne spelling, or the more modern (and user-friendly) Grania? Combos? Grace O'Malley, the 16th century "pirate queen" was actually Grainne. Her nickname was Granuaile, which I've heard alternately as "GRAN-yuh-wayl" or "GRAHN-yuh-wayl." It means "bald Grainne" because, when young, she cut her hair off to look like a boy so she could sail on her father's boats. It's a GP middle name for me. What do you think of Orla Granuaile or Oona Granuaile? Combos? TIA.

I've always thought Grainne was gorgeous. I like the way that looks much better, it looks warmer and more romantic, I suppose. Ohhhh I know I had some lovely combos with it, every time I need combos and realize they're all gone forever I get sad all over again! :(
Grainne Guinevere, I remember that from when I was in to fantasy ish things
Grainne Royse! Remembered that tooGranuaile is way a good GP middle name. Does it feel piratey to you? I'd like to keep it piratey, in which case I think Orla Granuaile works alright. Oona not as much, I think it's too light/white and honest... but spelling it Una would work for me, actually! I like it.
Fay Granuaile
Neas Granuaile
Mona Granuaile
Wendy Granuaile... just thought that was fun

Royse is new to me, or at least to my aging memory bank. Grainne Royse is enchanting! And Grainne Guinevere can come over and party any time. No apologies for loving a hard "g" sound. Love it. Una Granuaile is taking my brain in weird, but fun, directions. Una always makes me think of "one." Next to Granuaile a mental picture of someone counting grains emerges, which I kind of like. Thanks! Neas Granuaile is nice. What about Neasa Granuaile? This is a new name for me and I'm still in the early stages of puppy love. I believe Neas / Neasa means, "not gentle" which sits pretty well next to Granuaile. I'm loving Mona Granuaile as well. In fact, I'm going to steal it for a combination poll today. That's what you get for being generous -- I steal things. :0P Muchas gracias, Welsh one.

Absolutely adore Grainne - haven't made up my mind on Granuaile yet, but it's not a name that I keep coming back too in the same way as Grainne. I much prefer the Irish traditional spelling and I have no idea why. It's a little more ethereal and lovely I think.

Yay. You adore it! I didn't always love it. Growing up I was relieved. The heavy "g" sound didn't appeal. My mother didn't use it because she was afraid people in the U.S. (in 1964) would pronounce it more like "granny." But now I can appreciate Grainne's deeper qualities. Heavy "b" and "g" sounds now attract me. I have only one combo for Grainne: Grainne Helen. It makes me think of early 20th century Ireland, when they were rediscovering their mythology. Greek mythology was already in vogue so the two origins feel comfortable together. Thanks for the feedback. :0)

Oh, Grainne Helen is perfect. I'd been thinking about the combo Grainne Alice or Grainne Ailish (honoring a friend named Ailish) but I much prefer Helen. It's bringing together that mix of Irish folklore and traditional sensibilities.

Ooh, Grainne Alice / Ailish is lovely. Alice / Ailis is so light and airy. Next to Grainne's earthiness they make a lovely duo. Glad you like Grainne Helen, thanks. :0)
