Sighting - Apollonia!
These days I work at a women's shoe store and I overheard a mother scold to her toddler, "Apollonia, put it down!" I thought maybe I'd misheard but moments later she said, "Come on. Apollonia! Sit down! Apollonia!"I was very surprised to hear it on such a little kid but I'm not a big fan of the name (I have an irrational prejudice against the letter P). Guess the parents are either really into Prince or really into Greek mythology.

I think Apollonia is lovely. I also like Apollinaria. Wouldn't use them, though.

I babysit an ApollinaHer parents are French, she goes to kindergarten with my middle one and she has no nickname either.I was calling her Apollonia at first until she finally corrected me...oops.I don't have trouble picturing it on a real kid now. She's very sweet.

Apollina is really pretty! Is it like "apple-eena"? How do you say it?

Pretty much, except more of an o sound in the middle. She's a cute kid.

I'm so glad to see this being used. I love Apollonia.

No...Apollonia is seriously pretty. It's really lovely. But the examples you gave show how much this doesn't work on a real person, sadly. It just seems silly and precious irl.I love the name a lot, but it's made me realise this isn't a real name first name choice...

Agreed. It's pretty and lovely in theory, but just doesn't work when being shouted across a department store!I could get on board with it if the full name was Apollonia but they went by a nickname day-to-day (like Polly)

I really like Apollonia. I also like Apolline, I think it has a pretty sound.

I'm predisposed to like names with a connection to Greek mytholgy anyway. But the name Apollonia was etched in my heart when I saw "The Godfather, Part I." When a young Al Pacino is sent by his family to hide out in Sicily he meets a local girl named Apollonia. Wow. I don't think she has a single line, but scenes with her in it mesmerized me. Plus, the nn Polly would be cute. :0)

I appreciate Apollonia and marginally like the nn Polly, however, Apollonia, nn Polly, is working for me! I like how it can be dressed up or down depending on the mood.

OTOoo - oooh. How about this? In 'Love in a Cold Climate" (or is it the sequel?) there's a minor character named Leopoldine. She goes by Polly. Is that great or what? :0)

Nah, I adore Leo so much that I'd have to call her Leo. With Polly, I'll stick with Apollonia. :-)

Total ditto! She was gorgeous and so was her name.

I tried to post a link but it wasn't working for some reason. If you go to youtube and search "Apollonia" and "Le Parrain" you will get a swoon-worthy 5 minute clip from the movie. (Oh, to be courted, . . . just not by a mobster . . . .) :0)

Being a big Prince fan, that's the first thing *I* think of. It's a pretty name, though. You could call her Apple, or Nia, or Polly, or Apollo, if you're feeling playful. It's a fun name.
