Some names that strike me as odd are common and acceptable in another language. For example,my husband has an in-law relative, female, named Daad. The family is Arabic-speaking.

Miriel, Isilya and Elior! Yay...
Lord of the Rings fans obviously. They have far more guts than I do. The boldest I can get is Caspian, Aravis and Rilian (Narnia) - and those are GPs. Miriel is just wonderful. Elvish princess, yes please.
Isilya is basically like calling your kid Wednesay... but only if you speak Elvish.
Elior is not technically in LOTR, that I know of... but it is a variant of Lior... which means "light" in Hebrew. I have Liora on my GP list, as well as Mirielle / Miriel.
Soda is just too much.

Apolloumi or Apollymi, not sure of spelling (b) - according to my Ancient Greek professor who told me about that baby, it literally means "I destroy." The boy in question is often referred to by his parents as "Apollo." We classicists have some rather eccentric tastes in names, but this is strange even for most of us, since it's not even a real Greek name...another person I've heard of has a son named Agamemnon, but since it's a real name, we don't mind it as much.

girl: Breeze ; boy: RolloI knew a girl called Breeze once. Also a baby boy called Rollo.

Rollo is laughable... I immediately started singing Doris Day's "Roly-Poly-Baby".
Breeze is kinda cute though, if you like naturey names. We have Amihan on our list, which literally translates to "breeze" or "wind" in my husband's language.

Aw, I like Rollo......and associate it with Roul. I find it dashing, not "Roly-Poly". :)

I had a classmate in high school named Breege. She'd be my age now, mid-fifties, but she was a baby once. I always thought it was the weirdest name on a person I've ever heard. Someone told me it's a nickname for Bridget, but her name was not Bridget.
vote up1
That is unique. The spelling is rather unappealing, and the sound is meh. I love Bridget though... I suppose Breege is a logical nickname... though Bridge is more sensical. In a related note - I know a girl named Brighty. She always told me that her parents loved the Irish Bridie... but wanted a spelling that Americans could pronounce (met her in Ireland, strangely). Years later, I find out that her real name is Bridget, but she just prefers Brighty.

Of people I've met? I can't even think right now... maybe Zuleika? I've met quite a few people with unusual names but not anything that was, like, waaay out there. If we're just talking real life in general though, there's always this:http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10523288Number 16 Bus Shelter always does me in!And I made a post on silly Puritan names after finding a book which chronicles the names of real-life puritans:http://www.behindthename.com/bb/baby/4521360That had such gems as, Flie-fornication, Fight-the-good-fight-of-faith, Job-rakt-out-of-the-asshes, If-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned,
Dancell-Dallphebo-Marke-Antony-Dallery-Gallery-Cesar, and my absolute personal favorite, and just about the best I've ever, ever, EVER seen: Judas-not-Iscariot. I just about about fell into an asthma attack I laughed so hard at that one!

Those are brilliant. I wonder whether their puritan parents actually called them by those names. "If-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned, dinner's ready!"

Love Judas-not-Iscariot! haha. Yeah, in case you had any questions... I decided to put the answer right in the name.

Probably the most unusual I've come across in real life is Kayum. It's strange to me because I was told it was a blend of Karen and Mark (the parents' names) but I can't quite see that myself. I have recently heard of someone else with a boy named Kayum so perhaps it is a legit name.My friend has a relative named Swaley (not sure on spelling). I have no idea where the mother(whose name is Fifi) got it from, although there were a handful born in the same year so not made up. Her other children have ordinary, popular names.Someone I once knew had a daughter named Keatlyn which I've not seen before or since. I guess it's just a variant of Kaitlyn/Caitlin.A friend has a daughter named Beatriz, pronounced as Beatrice. I have never understood why they chose that spelling as they have no Spanish connection at all and I imagine it causes a lot of confusion. Those aren't as weird as some but the vast majority of people I know choose very normal (boring!) names for their kids.

The only blended name I've come across is Claudria;mother is Gloria, father is Claude. I think it's successful, perhaps because I know the young woman, nice girl.

I think Claudria is quite pretty, but Claudia is a 'real' name which works just as well so I'd have gone with that.

Adore Beatriz. It is my favorite variation of the name. I also do not see the Kayum, Karen and Mark connection, but I love blended names. We seriously (for about five minutes) considered Julidi, Judi, Helius and Dijuli as combos of our names... but our letters just don't match!I have a friend named Shahane (sha-hahn-eh). I think her name is just lovely and it is a combo of her parents names Handford and Shaniya. She married a man named Tam and they just named their daughter Shantelle... so "shan" from mom "t" from dad and "elle" because she is a girl.

The two names that always pop in my head when this question is asked are really not all that crazy, but I find them weird... 1. Harlet. I understand that the sound is pretty and even the spelling catches your eye. But the name is said just like "harlot" and I find that totally inappropriate as a moniker. I just cannot support such a name on a child. 2. Klimberly. This is my niece via my husband Julius. No idea why they decided to put the extra "L" in there... but there it is. They call her Klim or YingYin (her Chinese name).

As to Harlet...that's why Harlow is a guilty pleasure for me. Sounds like a French pronunciation of harlot, honestly.

Hahaha. Oh, that is great. I had never thought of that. I actually like Harlow... but my last name is Payot, so.... name ruined. :)

I kinda like Lilac Moon. I mean, when you have a cool last name, you gotta up the interesting factor with the first. Chilli is hilarious though.

Kimani is the weirdest, but I like that name. The worst I would say is Kaela, mainly because it's a terrible spelling of an already terrible name
