Clarice - Years ago I used to babysit for a family with a girl called Clarice, they pronounced it KLA-ris not klə-REES, it suited her well so I've liked it since.

I really like Peggy for Margaret, I always forget that is an option. I like your name as well. Elunid is great! I had Melusine on my list for a bit, which is a bit softer but somehow reminds me of this name. Everild and Endzela I have never heard of! Great names. My daughter is Clarisse... I wanted Clarice, but my husband refused any name with the word "rice" in it. Ha. Clarisse was our compromise, though the spelling made the name soooo much less clunky than I prefer. It fits her though.

I'm a big fan of "clunky" old fashioned girls names. I like from your list:
Gilda
Oona - though I'd consider this more fanciful than clunky.
Tilda
Maude
Marta
Minerva
Clotilda
Agnes
Edith (Edie)
Harriet
Ethel
Matilde / Matilda
Beatrix / Beatriz
Astrid
Ingrid
Greta
Alma
Gertrude
FredaI'll add:
Blythe
Cornelia
Dorothy
Gail
Joan
Mabel
Ruth
Vera
Winifred

Winifred is perfect for the list... I misse dthat. I like your additions. Cornelia will always be a fave, and Gail is a GP for me. I know a 1 year old named Oona. It's pretty exciting to see it in use. I am also glad to see that so many people like Clotilda, Tilda and Gilda. Gilda is in our top name.

I love the names Harriet and Edie. I'm also very fond of the names Ingrid, Millicent and Matilda. Plus Doris was my great grandmothers name, also her cousin was called Muriel.

Muriel is so underappreciated, I love it. Doris has such a sweet sound, I am surprised more people haven't picked up on that yet. Harriet and Edie would make a great sibset too.

Off your list, I like:Oona - went to school with an Oona, she was lovely
Minerva
Edith (Edie)
Harriet
Tamsin
Agatha
Beatrix / Beatriz
Araminta
Camille
Astrid
Bianca - one of my faves; never thought of it as particularly clunky, though
Ingrid
Greta - as a nnNames off my list that might seem a bit clunky:Aldith
Claudette / Claudia
Cordula
Elspeth
Enid
Hilda
Maris
Maxine
Norma
Ruth
Sedna
Tansy
Wilhelmina

Hilda, Sedna and Cordula are great! Aldith is new to me, but I like it. Claudia is one of my GP names. I always think of Babysitters Club though, so I forget about it's clunk. Bianca is one of my faves too... it does have a soft vibe to it, but the consonants are so fierce and heavy in the name, that I choose to categorize it with clunk.

Edith
Agatha

Of those, I like:
Oona - I am acquainted with an Oona whose age is six.
Eudora - I feel no clunks at all here. It's lovely
Clarice - same with this
Doris
Muriel
Francine
Edith (Edie) - would totally have named a daughter this. Husband refused
Tamsin
Myrna
Gretchen
Millicent
Frederica - sl pref Federica though.
Alma
Freda
Ingrid .. is okay too.Lots of this list does not seem clunky to me. Araminta? Bianca? That's princessy. Camille, Matilda, Beatrix all fashionable.
I hate Myrtle. Reminds me of "murder"My faves which might seem clunky:Ursula
Virginia
Yvette

I agree with your "fashionable" assessment, but that only makes me glad that clunk is going mainstream.Of your list, Priscilla and Carole are huge faves of mine. Marjorie will always eb pretty, and Judith is on my wish list. Gillian and Mildred deserve mention too. I think they have a lot of class, but I may be biased as I have really awesome inlaws with these names. Ursula is all sorts of awesome.

I like the way you broke that up, though disheartened that Eudora on your "still too clunky" list. I think I am mostly an endearing clunk kind of person... though Nadine and Matilda are Dh's faves... so his style is a bit more like yours. Your assessment of Tamsin, Camille and Alma is interesting though.
Tamsin is a bit more mainstream, but the sounds are definately consonant heavy. I find this the trendiest of the list. Camille oozes class and sophistication, as evidenced by it's pop culture use for the high class lady. Still, I think teh sound carries a strength that matches much of teh clunkier options. Alma is so old-school. I just have no trouble picturing a wheelchaired grandma with hearing aids (usually at a piano, thanks to Sister Act). Hmm, but it might be too smooth to be clunky if I think about it.

Thanks. Gilda is our top midle name right now - but I just love clunky names for their own personality.

Ingrid is a favorite of mine.
I also like:
Clarice
Matilda
Gretchen
Astrid
BiancaNames that have a similar feel: Ada, Ida, Inga, Frances, Marge/ Margery, Bridget, Lois, Gretel, Martha

Ooo! I love Inga. Hope you are not offended, but I think I will be naming a fish Inga in the near future. I could never justify it's use IRL, but it's such a gem that I want to be able to say it aloud for a good readon. All of those you offered are great by the way. I love Gretel and Bridget and Lois is a GP of mine. I also predict that Ada will be the next big thing - to offset the Ava and Eva currently on trend.

Ah! Love to see Gilda in use, thanks for that tidbit. Your list to add is great. Ermentrud is just so out there that it rockets back to awesome. Geraldine is a family joke (has to do with School House Rock "geraldine played hard to get..." part of the Interjections song). Jacobina is interesting, I totally forgot about that. I have also never seen Magda.

Clunky does have its appeal! I think the long feminized versions of masculine names especially fit into this category:Albertine / Alberta
Eugenia
Georgiana / all feminine forms of George
Henrietta
Jamesina
Martina / Martine
Norbertine
Roberta
Thomasina
Wilhelmina And there are so many more!
vote up1
They fit perfectly. I adore Norbertine. Told another poster I was going to name a new fish Inga... and I might make it two for Inga and Norbertine. Such a great name. Martina is on the border for me though - it almost seems too romantic to carry clunk.

Thanks for the response. Again, glad to see some love for Gilda out there! (it's our top middle)
