I think it would sound invented, and that matters more to me than sounding like Stephan. It does sound like Stephan but I've heard the name Zephaniah, so I just think of Zephaniah. I don't mind invented names and I think Zephan would be a good name. You would just have to want to use it enough not to mind that people would have to be taught.
