names I've come across and a question
Some names I've come acrossNico - named from Velvet Underground
Lumin
PriscillaKal-El
DesmondThe only one I kind of like it's Nico, just because it has a very spunky sound. Then again the bearer was very cool and spunky (4 year old) so that could influence me. I find Kal-El ridiculous. On to my question:
I wanted to get a non-name nerd opinion on the names Tabitha and Reuben. One person saw Reuben as ethnic, something I've never heard before. Thoughts?

Lumin would be better as Lumina or Lumino. Lumin on its own makes me think of Lumens. Tabitha can have a "witchy" vibe, which turns some people off. Other people view it as distinctly Biblical. I can see how someone would see Reuben and think of it as ethnic, as I believe its a Hebrew name.

Nico is spunky, but that's its problem; it's self-consciously spunky.
I really like Priscilla. Very pretty and delicate. Lumin doesn't seem like a name to me, like a body part or a chemical or something.
Kal-El is lame. I'm so tired of the superhero and comic-book craze. I'm not that old but I can remember when that kind of stuff was for kids and it was not cool to still be crazy about it as an adult.Tabitha is kind of cute, but not that cute. It strikes me as the kind of name a person would give a cat, thinking they were being very original, and then they'd find out it wasn't original and be annoyed.Reuben? Well, I only ever knew one, spelled Ruben, who was Mexican. It does seem a bit "ethnic" or Jewish to me. But it also sounds most like a sandwich.

Nico - Love this. I like it better on a boy (Niko), but it's fun on a girl too.
Lumin - Um, all I hear is the unit of measurement. So no.
Priscilla - way too pink and frilly for my tomboy tastes
Desmond - I don't mind it. I feel like it could grow on me like Dermot did.
Tabitha - I quite like it.
Reuben - one of my favourites! Despite the sandwich association. Ethnic as in Jewish, perhaps?

I'm not a fan of any of the names youve come across. I do love both tabitha (without the nn tabby) and Reuben. I would love to use Reuben if we have a boy. My husband thinks that it's too "Jewish" and sounds like we would be naming our kid after a sandwich.

Not keen on Nico as a full name on a girl, probably because I've come across it a lot on boys/men and like it as a boy-name. VU Nico was born Christa, I think; she had a few decent songs but I wouldn't name a kid after her.
Lumin looks wrong, like it should be Lumi or Luminita.
Priscilla is nice to see, Kal-El is dafter than a box of frogs and I'm not a fan of Desmond which is very elderly here.I've never met a Reuben and if I picture one he's probably American and Jewish, but don't see why he has to be, and it's a nice name.
Tabitha is okay, but I wouldn't fancy being a Tabby.

Nico: a fake name, on a girl or woman. Always was and always will be IMO. On a boy it's sort of Milo-ish ... too lightweight for my taste.Lumin: unfortunately I can't like this because of the word lumen which makes me think of intestines and blood vessels.Priscilla: I like this a lot on paper. It's a good name. I'm not sure it would be easy to bear.Kal-El: you know, I don't object to the idea of this, so much as I just don't like saying it. It sounds clunky.Desmond: for some reason this sounds depressing to me. Glum. And it strikes me as indoorsy and wimpy like Theodore and Ambrose.Tabitha: I guess I can't give you a real non-nerdy opinion, but I think it's a little flakey in real life.Reuben: I don't know what I think of it. It's dorky, but also sounds statusy in a way, like Russell, vaguely surnamey. It's not ethnic to me. The sandwiches might make it seem ethnic maybe ... makes me think of a kosher deli? lol

Nico is my preferred nickname for Nicholas/Nicolas/Nikolai as I'm not a fan of Nick, but I don't like it as a given name. Desmond is nice. I really dislike Priscilla, Lumin reminds me of the intestinal lumen, and Kal-El is just terrible. I hate the term "ethnic" when applied to names. All names are ethnic. I'd guess that the person probably meant it as a euphemism for black. Reuben isn't tied to any particular race in my opinion, but I hate the "roob" sound and it's all sandwich to me. Tabitha is all witchy cat. I dislike the "bith" sound and am really put off by the nickname Tabby.

Nico-cheerful!
Lumin-I just hear my late sister-in-law saying "Allumez!" ("put the light on!")but that's particular to me.
Priscilla-It's good, I like it.
Desmond-I wouldn't use it, but I don't dislike it.
Kal-El-Superman's father, maybe? something like that?Tabitha-a cat does come to mind, but it's use-able.
Reuben-it does seem a Jewish name to me,but certainly anyone could use it. A good name.
As for it being a black name, it seems to depend upon where one lives. The black people where I live all have French names,or names appropriate to their home countries, as they are mostly students from Africa.
Black people that I grew up with(another time and place) had names anyone might have-Daniel, Margaret, Patricia, Harley.

Nico – I like Niko. Wait, was this a girl? Hate it for a girl.
Lumin –nice name for a lamp, also seems male
Priscilla –hate it, pris is not an attractive sound to meKal-El –horrible
Desmond –dated, old manish Reuben –dislike the spelling and makes me think of the sandwich (and they don’t even exist here). As for ethnic, it’s Jewish to me, Ruben would be Spanish (mostly because the only ones I’ve met were Jewish or Spanish).
Tabitha –it’s not used where I live at all, so I would assume Protestant religious family. I also associate it with a cat.

Nico: I like Nico. Was the bearer a boy or a girl? I've heard it used for both sexes.
Lumin: Not my thing.
Priscilla: I had a doll named Priscilla growing up, so I always liked the name. I've heard people say it's too prissy, but I think it's fine. It's retro in a way that isn't dusty and mothball-y.Kal-El: Well, I can't say much, since I have a cousin named after a comic book character. He could always go by Kal.
Desmond: It's fine.Tabitha: Eh...I don't have much of an opinion on this one. It's not pretty, but it's not exactly ugly. The right type of girl can pull it off just fine.
Reuben: When they said "ethnic", did they mean "black"? I'm curious.

Nico was a girl.As for it being a black name... Idk. I'm kind afraid to ask because it could cause my Facebook to blow up, especially as this friend has a habit of upsetting people. I'll PM her later, I think.

"Black" did not occur to me, and I'm usually very quick to spot black names. But maybe.

I love Tabitha, but I'm not sure how much of a name nerd I am and how it flies with the general public. I kind of think the general public thinks it's too much of a cat name.Reuben -- ethnic? What, Jewish? I don't see it that way, though I can't say that I like it, but perhaps non-name nerds would see it that way. Although I'm not as much of a name-nerd as most people here, I think that I am more than most people, and maybe most would see it that way. I also think a lot of people would say, "It's a sandwich."I like Priscilla but not the rest. Desmond is very nerdy to me.

I always see this here, re: Tabitha. As a Tabitha I've legit never gotten the "it's a cat name!" thing. Tabby cat is a nickname, but I've never gotten "that's a cat name".Witch, on the hand... get that a lot. Not as often as I did as a kid in the 80s/90s when Bewitched was still on tv all of the time, but I still get it often enough.I've been subbing these last few years as well and a lot of the teens I've been subbing have complimented me on the name and told me it sounds like the name of a character in a fantasy/historical book (I've actually had several different girls, in different classes say something along these lines this past year! so weird!). I'm not as up on YA as I used to be, but now I'm wondering if Tabitha is coming around in YA fiction lately.eta: this is in IL btw, Chicagoland area. I've gotten the witch comment all over the US. When I was in England I just had folks telling me it was old fashioned.

Reuben did get the sandwich quite often. So far Tabitha has been approved, save by another name nerd.I was thinking Latino with Reuben. I'm just afraid to ask because the commenter is... Annoying.
