This or that or something else?
So we've been reconsidering our boys names all over again. We've eliminated quite a lot of them, and the ones remaining are:Vance
Rafferty - possibly with nn Rafe, but NOT Raf
Tate
Peter - but he would be called Peter Paul Conrad, which may sound a bit ridiculous. Or not?
Carlyle nn LyleMommy to Myrtle Nola (22-10-2012) and baby due 25-05-2015

Or Peter Conrad Paul? I like that! In fact, apart from Paul Conrad, it's the only one I do like.

My sons went to school with a boy (now a man!) named Peter-Paul Lastname. No-one ever thought it was strange. And I suppose you are not planning to use the two names like that, but you could. My younger son is named Peter, I like the name very much, and he likes it too.

Vance is okay. I still like Paul Conrad the best, though. When I look at Peter Paul Conrad, I want to stick & Mary after Peter and Paul. :P

Vance: I don't like this. It has a slick, greasy vibe to it. I expect him to be a mechanic who sells stolen electronics on the side. For some reason, Van by itself doesn't have that vibe. Rafferty: I just think of Daffy and taffy. I just can't get behind it. I do like Rafe, though. Tate: Okay, but I do tend to think about teats. Peter: I've never liked the name Peter because its a slang term for a penis. Peter Paul Conrad makes me think of Popes. Carlyle: Makes me think of Carlisle which is the name of a few cities and apparently, with one swift google, the name of many brands. Lyle is better on its own, but kind of old and geeky sounding. Is Paul Conrad the full middle name, or is Conrad the last name? I suppose I like Rafe Paul Conrad the best.

Paul Conrad is the full middle name.

Gotta be honest - I liked Paul Conrad a lot. Of your list though, love Vance. I know that it is not everyone's forte, but I find it so lively and simple that it swings straight into adorable territory for me. Vance Paul, Vance Conrad or Vance Paul Conrad all sound great to me as well. Tate is the name of one of my cousins who is not-so-nice... so, I never really like it when I see it. However, he is the only one I know, so that name must not be that popular, and you have to admit that it is spunky. Tate Paul does not appeal to me though. Carlyle is one of my faves, but spelled Carlisle. I think this is a great name, but I notice the matchy spelling with Myrtle. I do like Y's though... so if a mid-y doesn't bother you in both names... Carlyle Paul and Carlyle Conrad are decent choices. Peter and Rafferty are nice names, but am not a fan of them in this case. Sorry. I honestly would stick with the solid and simple Paul, or go with Vance or (spelling change) Carlisle.

I love Vance too, it's my favourite at the moment, but it doesn't seem to get much love here. The negative reactions make me feel uncertain.

I try to take online opinions with a grain of salt. In the real world... people don't know as much about names as we do on this site. So... far more is acceptable. I met a woman on Sunday who thought Emma and Ella were incredibly old fashioned. She had no idea kids were being named Ella and Emma today. I appreciate the opinions of this board, because it really helps me clear my head and decide if I truly like something or not. But, I have kept Blaise, Renard, Eudora, Leontine, Roque, Alondra, Judine, Adilette, etc on my lists despite negative feedback. I might not use those names IRL.. but I still like them. Vance is uncommon and has a retro-flair that I love. It seems trendy, but isn't. Obviously, don't use a name unless you are sure of it - but also take into account that where you live and your family will have the most impact on the usabilty of a name.

I love Rafferty and Rafe! Have you considered Rafe on it's own?Vance is, eh, ok. It has a certain handsome appeal but also feels sort of slippery and sly- like the name of a handsome traitor. I keep imagining someone like the Hans character in FROZEN- seemingly kind until his ulterior motives become apparent.Tate is too insubstantial for my liking- it seems too surnamey or nicknamish. And outside of that also has a very "jockish" vibe to me. Peter is distinguished and a "hole in one" name that you can't go wrong with. Peter Paul Conrad is catchy in that slightly awkward sounding, but famously memorable way. Plus it's not like that's how you'd introduce him every time. Carlyle looks really nice next to Myrtle, but it's never felt like a real NAME to me.

I haven't really considered Rafe on it's own. I'm not sure what to think about it. It sounds a bit, well, unsubstantial.

stick to Paul Conrad ...The others are nowhere even close to as good. Rafe is so freaking posh and obnoxious, especially.

Vance - not my style, but there's nothing wrong with it. Also, how about Vaughn.
Rafferty - How about nickname Raffer? Or Rafty? Or Raffy?
Tate - Cute.
Peter - Peter Paul Conrad does sound a little bit ridiculous, but truthfully, not that many people will remember his middle names, so it's not unusable. Peter is not that interesting, compared to your other options.
Carlyle nn Lyle - Yay. :) My first choice, by far, would be Rafferty - that said, I love Raf, so that doesn't get in the way.
Second choice, Carlyle.

Raffer sounds like a dog. Rafy is nice.

I still like Paul Conrad the best, but out of those I like Peter Paul Conrad. Not a fan of any of the others.
