Clay - Cowboy mostly, though it also has the flavor of a dastardly nobleman.
Nicholas (who doesn't use a nickname ) - Nickleby. Makes me think of Dickens' Nicholas Nickleby, a compassionate young man with a somewhat short temper who will do anything for those he loves.
Marcus - A past-his-prime but still competent knight.
Lloyd - An overweight, selfish boy of perhaps twelve.
Donovan - A dark-haired and dark-complexioned young man with a chip on his shoulder. Probably a loner vigilante.
Dale - A newspaper reporter. Generally a friendly guy, but he'll dig deep to get the facts.

I really like Nicholas and Marcus. They sound handsome, classical and polished. Clay, of course, is earthy and reminds me of a rancher or farm boy. Lloyd sounds like an older man with a walker and suspenders. Dale is okay but a little hum-drum without much zest. Donovan is a Irish surname that fits right in with Scottish Douglas. It makes me think of "Donovan's Reef" with John Wayne.

Clay - could be dignified.
Nicholas - a scholar
Marcus - youthful. My impression is generally neutral, but it's a good name.
Lloyd - bookworm
Donovan - college athlete, specifically a football player.
Dale - a NASCAR driver or fan, or even a woman.
