Predictions for Vail / Vale
Hello BtNers!I actually do really like the name that Savannah Guthrie chose for her daughter last year - Vale. It seemed so fresh, unexpected, yet totally sweet and normal. Obviously it was bittersweet, because celebrity names tend to skyrocket. However, I am wondering if this will happen to Vale, alternatively spelled Vail. What do you think?
And... do you think it a fresh and exciting choice for a child today, or a trendy and expectedly choice?
THANKS!______________________________________________

Sound-wise, I can't say Vale does much for me, but I do enjoy the nature imagery it brought to mind when I read it, though I can't say that imagery would be triggered by merely hearing it. Reading Vail brought a bride to mind (despite the spelling); I would guess many folks would tend to see a bride's veil upon hearing the name called out at the park, etc., or perhaps think of skiing.I'm not one who really studies popularity trends but I'd be surprised if Vale/Vail became all the rage.I can't say I'd call it "fresh" (aside from the nature imagery induced by seeing the word) or "exciting", certainly not "expected", but perhaps it does fit the "trendy" category in the sense that word names seem to be on the rise.

I guess it's alright.I mean, I enthused about it at first consideration, and agreed with you, but something ... Then after saying it to myself a few times I thought veil, and a shadow fell on it and I didn't really like it any more. It's like Spring (boing!) and Jocelyn (jostling) - should be appealing, but it takes on a little bit of the wrong color because of soundalikes. So I could get accustomed to it as a name, but I can't really enjoy it the way I wish I could. Sure it's trendyish because of the wordname thing, but that doesn't bother me. I think Vail looks more attractive, but it totally makes me think "outrageously expensive skiing destination" and because there's no other association, that ruins it.I don't see it becoming any more popular than, say, Paisley. Probably less so.Anyway I like Dale better. Or Dael (the archaic spelling of the word? hah).

Vale is green hills and Ireland to me. It's pretty and happy. I don't like Vail, it's like veil and that reminds me of death and sorrow. I don't think it will become very popular. I'm sure some new parents will "discover" it and use it for their child but I really doubt it will end up in the top 1000.I wouldn't say it's fresh and exciting, well exciting maybe, but for some reason it has an old feel to it. I like the Vale spelling. It doesn't say trendy to me. Vail does.
I much prefer it for a boy though. I would looove to see it on a boy but I guess it's unisex.

Ooo, on a boy. Interesting. I do like the sound for a boy... but I guess it just reminds me of Valentino. I know a couple of adults Valentinos with this nickname. Still... I would rather Vale than Valentino. Nice one!
