I really don't like Israel as first name, it's just heavy and cumbersome. In the Israeli novelist Avraham Yehoshua's book "A Late Divorce" there is an Israel who is called by his surname by everyone, including his wife, because "one Israel is already enough".
Personally I love it, but I do love Biblical names.
I had thought I had heard them say a name that sounded like SAY-sah but when I searched couldn't find it. Starting to think I am remembering incorrectly.
They've known it was going to be a boy for a long time so I'm not sure why they'd announce a girl's name.
On last night's episode they said they had Selah picked out for a girl.
Weird, I was sure they'd use Richard in there.
They said they were going to maybe do a theme of family names and maybe significant places (on FreeJinger, someone joked maybe they'd have a child named Katmandu) so I guess they did what they said. Okay. I can't complain, it's waaay more interesting than any other names a Duggar has ever put on a child (short of Jubilee Shalom, I guess).

I have to admit I was one of the people hoping they'd name him Richard "Rick" James ;)
Interesting. I kinda like Israel as a name, but I would have saved it for the MN spot. David Israel Dillard has better flow too.
Israel isn't something I'd personally choose. Its more of a name of a place rather than someones actual name. I'm aware there's plenty of place names out there but "Israel" just doesn't work for me. It isn't the worst out there. Its miles better than other names. David is decent, classic and fine. Can't really go wrong with classics
I'm hoping she doesn't end up having as many or just as many kids as her mother there. :S No one in their right mind really would have that many biological kids-theres no reason to. I'm not meaning to be rude, i'm just being honest. But of course that's their business and concern. I just don't keep up with shows or pop culture such as that.
Israel David is fine but I prefer Isaac David

Politics
I am pretty darn sure that it was not only chosen for religious and personal reasons (they like to travel?), but also to wave their political flag very very high.
Derick was wearing an Tsahal Israeli Defence Forces shirt in one of the People pictures.

Ugh. I didn't know that. I was just thinking they went for a more uncommon biblical name. That changes everything...

Ironically, that's why I don't like the name. I don't like seeing names used for political reasons.
And why would he be so big on the IDF? I thought the Duggars were the type of evangelicals who think that non-Christians go to hell. Christians are a minority in Israel, and most of the Christians living there are Arabs (and they're usually Orthodox to boot, which is very far from the Duggars' beliefs).

Or Catholics, a group some evangelical Christians see as heretics...
Christian Zionism is a big thing for American fundamentalists. I'll let you look it up for yourself because this is not really the place to discuss it, suffice to say that it's somewhat disconnected with much of the reality of the area.
I'll bet they're Zionists, so the Jews having a homeland in Israel is a-okay by them, as long as all those of Judeo-Christian beliefs have access to their places of worship. Not Muslims. But this is all speculation - I've never heard them state an opinion on the subject.
I know, if he hadn't been wearing the t-shirt I would have thought, "how nice, they like travel, it must be a doubly meaningful choice." But seeing the Tsahal shirt I knew there must have been ulterior motives.

I think they are.
At least, they "don't eat pork" (suuure) and some of the girls have been seeing wearing Star of David necklaces.

They've visited Israel several times and some of the girls have been seen wearing a Star of David necklace (isn't that kind of offensive to people who are actually Jewish?) so you're probably right on the money.

The name isn't bad, but personally I don't like the name Israel, and David as a middle name makes it kind of repetitive when you take the last name into account.
Israel is used here in Brazil, and its usage isn't confined to Jewish families. I know two guys named Israel. Both of them are Catholic. Portuguese and Spanish-speaking Catholics seem to use Old Testament names a lot more often than other Catholics. They're common in Spain and Portugal as well as Latin America. (I wonder if anyone else has noticed this besides me. Given that Iberia had a very influential Jewish community in medieval times, it isn't surprising. The Jews of medieval Spain and Portugal had a strong impact on the culture.)

I know a Hispanic Israel Jr, and he has brothers named Ilijah and Izaiah. I also know a Job from Mexico. Also, wasn't the nation of Israel named after someone with the name Israel? Then it would be more like Carolina or Virginia, where it was a personal name before a location name.
Hmm, I wonder if they will have a geographical theme?
Israel isn't bad. I've heard much worse. I associate Israel as a Jewish surname, so to me it is just like someone non-Scottish naming their daughter MacKenzie. Though I do know this is probably just me being odd.
Edited to say: I didn't know there was a Biblical Israel until I clicked on the name in our database. Shows what I know. ;)

I like it. Israel isn't a name I'd have expected from a Dugger, well Dillard. I'm glad they don't plan on going for a letter theme.
They don’t? I hope they don’t do it, but I haven’t heard anything about it (I know her brother is doing an M theme to honor his mother Michelle).

Now, whether or not they stick with that has yet to be determined. lol

Both names are fine on their own, but Israel Dillard is a bit too rhymey for my tastes (the 'i' in Israel is pronounced the same as the 'i' in Dillard). And what if, somewhere down the line, people start nicknaming him Is or Izzy? Both of those nicknames don't go very well with Dillard.
I also feel there is an overabundance of 'd' in the full name, what with David containing two 'd' and the surname containing two 'd' as well.
In short: there is a bit too much repetition in the entire name for me. But that's just my personal taste: I'm one of those people who prefers for given names to have as few letters in common with the surname as possible, for the sake of variety as well as to avoid rhymes.

I like it a lot. But I hope they aren't going with I. That's going to be a lot tougher to pull off than J or M.
I believe they've said that they aren't going to go with a letter theme... thankfully!
Good!
Their girls name was Selah so that suggests to me that they definitely arent sticking to one letter!

I like it. Israel is bold but not unheard of.
