Better spelling /More friendly spelling
I'm making a name change and would like to pick a friendly spelling for my last name Ferris.
I want to avoid Ferris (Ferris wheel) so I'm choosing between Faris and Farris.I want something that is less confusing, and easy for people to read and write.. and more common so people recognize it.whats do you think?
Faris or Farris?

Farris.Faris looks like far-is instead of fair-is.
Anyway, I agree Farris is better than Ferris. There used to be a guy in my husband's circle of friends whose surname was Farris and they all called him that. So it seems friendly to me.

Thank you everybody for your kind responses.I went to court couple hours ago but didn't submit the paper because I wanted to consider it more.My last name isn't Ferris. Its something way different that I hate, So I'm changing the whole thing.I guess I will wait for more responses from you guys (many here know better than me), if not I will rewrite the question differently and re-post it.

Honestly, the most common spelling that immediately comes to mind is Ferris. Between the other two, I suppose two r's looks better.

Ferris and Faris/Farris sound rather different to me. Stick with Ferris. I don't know why a Ferris wheel is such a bad association.

Between Ferris, Faris, and Farris, I would think Ferris is already the least confusing and easiest for people to read and write and recognize. By far.If you do decide to change it, for whatever reason, Farris (like Harris) seems most reasonable to me - though, again, way less "friendly" than Ferris.Faris looks strange to me and not the most logical.

I agree with the others, Ferris is probably the easiest. While, I know if you want to change your last name you will, I just have to say that Ferris is an awesome last name. The guy that invented the Ferris wheel was an engineering genius. The Ferris wheel was made for the Chicago World Fair of 1893 to rival the Eiffel Tower of the Paris World Fair, and considering it was mechanical and moved and that sort of thing was all the rage, I dare say they did accomplish beating it.Now my history nerd is going away.If you must change it, I personally think Farris is easier. It's close to Harris, so it seems more instinctual to me.However, there is the American actress Anna Faris, so that might be more familiar to people.Which do you like better? What looks best with your first name?

Thanks for the history lesson ;)I agree about Ferris, and I like the engineer too!I read the comments and decided to pick Faris, then you recommended Farris so i'm confused again :(

I think Faris is the general consensus, and it is a surname already in use. So if you like it, go for it. :)

Honestly, I think Ferris IS the least confusing/more friendly/more common spelling. All you have to do is say "like a Ferris wheel" and people should know how to spell it, if they know how to spell at all. It's a good trick.Although I guess you could go with Faris "like Paris with an F". That's a good trick too. But I bet you a dollar that then you'll get Pfaris at least once.

AgreeFerris is already a recognizable word and last name (I went to school with some Ferris kids). I wouldn't change it, but if you did "Paris with an F" seems the easiest to do.

I think Ferris is the most common and recognizable spelling of the last name, and that the Ferris wheel association is not worth a moment's worry on your part.
If somebody said to me their last name was Ferris, that is the spelling I would automatically assume it was unless they told me different.

I personally like Ferris since I am a chemistry nut (C6Fe6, lol!) and a Ferris Bueller fan, but if you feel you must change it... I would go with Faris.
It's more recognizable, think of Anna Faris.

In my thinking Ferris would be the easiest for people to recognize because of the Ferris wheel.Faris would be my next choice. Then you can always say, "Faris, like Paris with an F." That's pretty simple.
