Re: 1940s France
in reply to a message by Pie
As a French person, I can tell you that these are pretty spot-on for the decade. The funny thing is that a lot of these names sound like the names of French characters in American or British films.1. Jean - boring, but it's still good.
2. Michel - I actually like this and wish it were more popular.
3. Daniel - I like it. I know a few my age.
4. Bernard - I like it.
5. Gérard - ick, this name is so dated.
6. Jacques - this name is pretty dated too.
7. Alain - I love this name! I do know one that's younger than me, but yeah, most Alains I know are over 50.
8. André - I'm kinda puzzled that this name is no longer popular here, since its cognates in other languages (like Spanish, Italian, English, Polish, and Russian) are still popular in their countries.
9. Claude - yes, it is pretty dated, but I do like it. The youngest Claude I know is 22.
10. Pierre - I still hear Pierre quite often. Probably one of the few names on this list that's still used a lot. I love it!
11. Christian - love it! The name doesn't have any negative connotations in France like it seems to in English-speaking countries.
12. Guy - definitely very dated.
13. René - I like this.
14. Robert - another name that I don't see why it's no longer popular here, since elsewhere in Europe it's still used. I don't know any Roberts under 30.
15. Jean-Claude - okay. Double names aren't very popular on young people these days. The only Jean-Claude I know is in his fifties.
16. Roger - okay
17. Jean-Pierre - this really sounds like a French character in an American movie. I don't think I've met anyone under 65 with this name.
18. Georges - I like it.
19. Marcel - I like it(f)
1. Marie - I like Marie, but it's such a cliche French name, even nowadays
2. Monique - I don't know any Moniques under 40. I don't really like it.
3. Nicole - my dad's oldest sister is Nicole (she was born in 1955). It is quite dated, but I do like it.
4. Françoise - I love this and I wish it was still popular.
5. Jacqueline - I don't get why this name is still popular among anglophones. In France, it pretty much screams old lady.
6. Danielle - definitely old lady here. Danielle Darrieux (she's a French actress) is 98.
7. Christiane - nah, I prefer Christine. Surely enough, this is the name of my dad's oldest first cousin (she was born in 1944).
8. Michele - ick, this one is really dated.
9. Annie - okay
10. Anne - kinda boring, but I do like it
11. Josette - okay, not too big on -ette names since they're not fashionable at all
12. Colette - I like this, actually, although it's probably because of Colette from Ratatouille :D
13. Jeannine - I prefer Jeanne
14. Michelle - like Jacqueline and Danielle, this name still being popular among anglophones baffles me.
15. Annick - I like this, actually
16. Danièle - yep, this is dated.
17. Chantal - I love this name! Personally, I wish people spelled it Chantal and not Chantelle. Chantelle isn't a legit French name. I hate when people call Chantal a trashy/chavvy name because I don't see anything trashy about it.
18. Yvette - so ugly
19. Claudine - I like it.
