Can I still use Oscar?
So Oscar is my favourite boys name. There are others on my list, but this is the one I keep coming back to and this is the only one I can see myself using.Problem? My mum and stepfather got a cat a few years ago and named him Oscar.Would it be ridiculous to still keep Oscar on my list? Would it be silly to have an Oscar-the-person and Oscar-the-cat in the same family? Or can I still use it, given that it's not my pet?Couple of things to keep in mind-
- I had zero say in the naming of this cat. Wasn't even in the same country.
- cat and child would not be in the same household
- the cat is only a few years old so baring an unexpected tradgedy could easily be around for another 10-15 yearsAny suggestions for boys names similar to Oscar that I might fall in love with instead? Oliver is unusable.

I'd feel weird about it myself.

The cat isn't going to be around his entire life and will eventually die. I doubt Oscar the cat will play a huge role in his life and if they won't live in the same house together, it's fine.

My friend's sister was named after a dog! Josie. Not Josephine, because the dog was just Josie. And a Labrador, and very beautiful.Stay with Oscar-the-person, I think. Oscar-the-cat, if he's anything like any cat I've ever owned or been owned by, will respond to or ignore any and every name according to how he feels at the time. And Oscar-the-person's potential grandparents clearly like the name! The only alternative I can think of would be Oswald, if you like O- names, or something more medieval like Alaric if that's the appeal of Oscar.

I think if it's your absolute fave boy name, then don't give up on it! I also love the name Oscar, it's so handsome. Have you considered Otis or Otto? I still prefer Oscar out of those three myself.

Eh, I don't think it's that big of a deal.I wouldn't give up the name you love because your parents who live in a different country have a cat with that name. Hell, cats don't care what you call them, they're just gonna ignore you anyway. So if your parents find it weird after Oscar-the-Person is born Oscar-the-Cat can have a new name. Some names that are a similar style:
Benjamin
Felix
Hugo
Jacob / Jacoby
Jago
Lucas
Max
Niko
Sebastian
Theodore

If you are determined to use Oscar, you could request that your Mother and stepfather rename their cat. Most cats don't answer to their name anyway.Name Suggestions:
Owen
Octavian
Oziel nn Oz
Otakar
Ozias
Osiris
OrenAdair
Connor
Asher
Lysander
Dexter
Jasper
Sylvester
Webster
Casimir

Of course you can! But if you still want other suggestions, what about Ossian or Victor?

Sure you can. If 'Oscar the cat' would be your cat, it would be a bit strange. But this way, I see absolutely no problem with using the name. Your child won't live with that cat in the same household and you can't be considerate of all names that others use for pets and so on. And, as hard as it sounds, but this cat won't stay for long and you surely would regret not using your favourite name just because of a little cat. Only if Oscar would be a human (e.g. your nephew) I would never use the same name, because it's irritating and would stay like this for a lifetime.

Use it! The cat will eventually die and you will regret not using it.
