Sibling Name
Which name do you like best as a sibling for Benjamin "Ben" and Margaret "Meg"?Caitlin "Cate"
Claire
Elizabeth "Beth" - but do you think Ben, Meg, and Beth all are too matchy?
Grace
Hope
Rosalie "Rosie"orAlexander "Alex"
Jonathan "Jon"
Patrick
Samuel "Sam"
Theodore "Teddy"And what would you name a sibling that isn't any of the names mentioned above?I'm struggling to find many boy's names I'd consider using right now, although it's not that big of a deal as I'm not yet having another baby nor even would know if it was a boy. :)

I think Theodore fits in quite well but I don't like any of the female options. I'll think on other options.

Benjamin, Margaret and Rosalie. "Ben, Meg and Rosie."Benjamin, Margaret and Alexander. "Ben, Meg and Alex."Free choice...Benjamin, Margaret and Octavia. "Ben, Meg and Taya."Benjamin, Margaret and Tobias. "Ben, Meg and Toby."

Cat's name is Tobias "Toby." ;)

Elizabeth is your best choice, but "Beth" wouldn't have to be her nickname. I think Eliza or Lizzie even spice up the set a bit more.Samuel called Sam is my favorite of your boy names, but Theodore works well, too.

I'm an Elizabeth nn Beth so that tends to get me vote, but I really like Rosalie nn Rosie with Ben and Meg. Although Ben, Meg and Libby could be cute. And Joanthan nn Jon totally gets my vote!Other suggestions:Emmeline nn Emma
Eleanor nn Nora
Adelaide nn Ada
Gabrielle nn Bri
Evelyn nn Evie
Genevieve nn Evie
Alice nn Allie
Andrew nn Drew
Nicholas nn Cole
Nathaniel nn Nate
Isaac nn Ike

I forgot about Genevieve. It was on our longer list for our daughter, but got cut. I keep liking peoples' girl name suggestions more than boy name ones, which is the opposite of what I was hoping would happen. Haha! I do like Andrew, but am not a big fan of any of its nicknames. Nicholas is already my son's middle name, so it's out.

Boys names are hard! There's very few that I love. So since you want boys names I'll try again:
Elias nn Eli
Everett nn Rhett
Abram nn Abe
Joshua nn josh
William nn will or Liam
Charles nn Charlie

Claire and Patrick. My suggestions would be Joseph "Joey" and Harriet "Hattie". I really like Margaret and Harriet for sisters.

I do think Beth is too much: too close to Ben and too doomed-sister with Meg.Clare, that spelling, would be good. Rosie names are everywhere, and Grace and Hope sink my boat rather than float it. Would you really add yet another Cate/Kate/Caitlin/Katelyn person to an already overloaded planet?I prefer Alec to the more common Alex and would be happy to see it. Jonathan and Samuel both seem flabby and slimy to me. John with an h would be refreshing. Theodore is nice and Theo is good. So is Ted, but Teddy is too bear and too babyish. Patrick is very nice, but I notice there's no nn. Hard to escape Pat! I like it on a boy, actually, but loathe it as a nn for Patricia. What about Ruth as a girl possibility? Beatrice? Eve? Anne? (Anne could be Nancy!)

For a boy, Timothy? Tim is good. I'd also use Thomas, nn Tom, or William or Daniel.
vote up1
I'm surprised you're the first person to suggest William. :) It is my favorite boy's name ever, but I can't use it! :( I'm still not over it.Annemarie was one of our back-up names for Margaret. I totally would call her Nan.

Benjamin "Ben", Margaret "Meg" and Samuel "Sam" go the best in my opinion. The girls are a little harder, I think Elizabeth goes best but Beth and Ben are perhaps a little too similar (but I'd like the kind of Little Women theme you'd have going on with your girls' names!)I'd name a sibling to these two, Ellen "Nell" or Josephine "Josie" or Christopher "Kit".Others:Harriet
Isobel
Eleanor
Matilda
Katherine
Florence
MadelineFrederick
Oscar
Lawrence
Gregory
Henry
Arthur
Edward
Robert
Oliver
Robin

Caitlin "Cate" - I like Caitlin but the million and one spelling options and the datedness it has now turn me off. Catherine nn Cate would be better with Ben and Meg. It's weird, I prefer Catherine to Katherine and then prefer Kate to Cate. But they're all good in my book!
Claire - Adore! This will almost definitely be a mn for a daughter for me and I think it sounds fab with your kids names.
Elizabeth "Beth" - I think Beth is too matchy with your kids and too Little Women with Meg. I think Ben, Meg and Lizzie would be adorable.
Grace - I love Grace it sounds good with your kids but for some reason it doesn't make me jump for joy
Hope - Hope is cute but seems in a different style to the other two.
Rosalie "Rosie" - I love this! I think I'd prefer Rose "Rosie" with your kids' names. Rose seems more grounded and solid than Rosalie (as do Benjamin and Margaret).
Alexander "Alex" - I prefer Alec but I like it
Jonathan "Jon" - I dislike Jon without an h and I'm not ridiculously keen on Jonathan

Bridget is one I really love but it's never quite made it into the list of names I'd consider using. Perhaps I should!

Elizabeth "Beth" and Alexander "Alex" really fit perfectly, as they have a similar classic historic vibe.
Wouldn't use Beth myself, though - I'd probably use Bet or Libby.
Next to those I like your Rosalie and Jonathan suggestions.
vote up1
Libby! Totally forgot about that one. Used to love it. Hmm.
vote up1
I like Claire the most out of those choices and I think it works with the others.
I also think Caitlin "Cate" works well.
There's no problem with Elizabeth "Beth" except the Little Women thing.
Hope is ugly IMO.
Grace is nice, but Claire and Cate are better.
Rosalie "Rosie" is ... eh. Rosie is so precious and Rosalie is even more. Rose with "Rosie" as a childhood nick, is far more pleasing to me.I guess Sam (Samuel) goes best with the siblings so it gmv.
Jon and Alex do, as well.
Alex and Patrick are the only names I really like on the boy list.Suggestions:
Amy
Melinda "Lindy"
Eve
Christina "Chris"
Christian "Chris"
David
Thomas "Tom"

You know, I loved Abigail for years and it would've been at the top of my list, but I guess I got tired of it some years ago. Maybe I should rethink it. I also like Johanna. Nathan I like, but not quite enough, and I do love Daniel. I actually occasionally remember that I like Daniel a lot and should add that to the list, but then I remember it's my brother-in-law's name!

Grace and Sam.Can't think of one of my own. Sorry.

Claire and Rosalie "Rosie" are my favorites for girls, I'm not sure I can choose which one I like more! Alexander "Alex" is definitely my pick for boys.

Care really appeals with Ben and Meg, so I'm inclined to say Caitlin. I think Ben and Beth are too close or I might say Elizabeth. For a boy Patrick and Samuel both sound good.I would use Evelyn perhaps "Evie" or Orson.I near said Nicholas, only to realize that's sort of in use already.

You know what I like to hear. ;)

I really like Grace, Hope, Beth, and Rosie. I actually really enjoy the cohesion of Benjamin, Margaret, and Elizabeth as Ben, Meg and Beth - they are all so sweetly classic together. I would like Elisabeth "Beth" a touch more than Elizabeth, although I suppose it hardly matters, really - most people would spell it Elizabeth anyway! Alexander is good too, but I'd go with Alec. Ben, Meg, and Alec? Such classy. I'm pretty wild about adding a Sam. I love the name Sam, and Sammy. It's so friendly. Theodore "Teddy" is also aces.Other ideas (of what I'd like to add to the set):Annemarie "Annie"
Virginia "Ginny"
Roberta "Robin"
Gertrude "Trudy"
Mildred "Millie"
Judith "Judy, Jude"
Hester
Beatrice "Bea"Isaac "Ike"
Henry
Peter "Pete"
Nathaniel "Nate"

Thanks, I also think Beth goes really well, and even though most people do seem to think it's too matchy it wouldn't stop me from using it if that's what seemed right. I love Alec too, maybe more than Alex, but I was just feeling Alex right now. I like just Al too. :)So are you aware that Annemarie and Virginia were the two back-up names for Meg? Ha. For some reason they're not at the top of my list anymore though. Peter and Charles have been ones I'd use in the past too, but don't love them so much anymore.Abraham. That's one I've been considering adding to my list of names I'd use. I might prefer Bram as a nn though, but again with the matchy sounds. Also I think it might be "too Biblical," so that when along with Ben's name it makes Margaret seem the odd one out.

Hope and Jonathan "Jon"But may I suggest Catherine "Cate" and Jonathan "Jack"?
vote up1
I do love both of your suggestions. Not sure why I've mostly kicked Catherine to the side lately. It used to be one of my favorites.
vote up1
Either way, I prefer Cate to Kate. :)
vote up1
I like Elizabeth "Beth" and Grace a lot for girls and Samuel "Sam" and Theodore "Teddy" a lot for boys. Honestly, though, I like all the names on your list! :)If it were up to me, I think I'd pick Elizabeth "Betsy" for a girl, because Betsy would sound so cute with Meg, and John "Jack" for a boy, just because I think it goes really well with Ben and Meg.
vote up1
I do like John "Jack" a lot, and it used to be my #1 choice for another boy. Jack could always be a nickname for Jonathan too!
vote up1
I think Rosalie and Alexander work best. Elizabeth also works, but yes, Beth and Ben are too close and tongue-twisty.
Hope would be a nice middle name, but doesn't seem right in first place somehow.
& I love Patrick, but I've never found an nn that I like for it.Others:
Isaac
Robert
Llewelyn Idris! well I can hopeElinor / Ellen
Laura
Rebecca
Joanna
Ruth
Lucy
vote up1
Oh how I would love to have the guts to use Llewelyn. It actually did make the final cut while we were naming Ben! But I'm too boring in real life. I actually would seriously consider using Idris as a middle name if we had another boy though. It's a family name and my Grandpa has mentioned before wishing someone would use it again.Hmm, Joanna I have always liked, but never enough to consider using. Maybe I should keep it in mind just in case.

Caitlin "Cate"- I like Cate, but Caitlin and all it's variants became so popular and trendy that I just can't bring myself to like it. Caitrin is an alternative (I know a girl named Kaitrin).
Claire- I love this with Ben and Meg. Fits the vibe perfectly.
Elizabeth "Beth" - Ben and Beth are a little too match. I think Elizabeth is perfect with Benjamin and Margaret, but maybe a different NN?
Grace- Nice but a bit of a snooze these days.
Hope- Fine, but I've never quite loved Hope. I don't see it with Ben and Meg.
Rosalie "Rosie"- Lovely, though a bit more fanciful than Benjamin and Margaret.orAlexander "Alex"- Love this name. I like it with Ben and Meg.
Jonathan "Jon"- Never loved Jonathan (or Jon with no H), but it works.
Patrick- I really like with Ben and Meg.
Samuel "Sam"- Good but very predictable.
Theodore "Teddy"- Love this.
vote up1
I think Sam is so predictable too, especially with Ben! That does put me off it, and it's not at the top of my list.
vote up1
For a girl, I like Elizabeth, Grace and Rosalie best with Benjamin and Margaret although I wouldn't use Ben and Beth together. Knowing myself, I'd trip over the two names. That could be just me, though. Any other nns for Elizabeth that you like? For a boy, they're all doable. Faves are Alexander and Theodore. You can't go wrong here.Other suggestions:Gabriel
Adam
Thomas
Catherine / Katherine
Susanna / Susannah
Eleanor
vote up1
I already combine Ben and Meg half the time and call one of them Men or Beg. hehe I do like Ellie for a nn, but I already have a niece nicknamed Ellie. I used to like Lizzie a lot.
vote up1
Beth is okay, but prefer it as a nn for Bethany, as I really dislike Elizabeth. But Beth and Ben are very sound-alike, like goofy twins. Meg and Beth make you wonder where Jo and Amy are.
I like Caitlin, though much prefer Kaitlyn, and don't like Kate much, but it probably fits in best with Ben and Meg. Claire is limp and watery and Rosalie is too fussy, while Rosie is too dowdy.I like all your boys' except not so much Alexander. Alex and Ben definitely sound like brothers, but the one I'd pick is Patrick. For a name not on your list for a girl I'd maybe choose Rebecca, but not Becky, as Ben and Becky sound cutesy together. Rebecca or Allison. For a boy, James or Robert.
vote up1
Ha, I already occasionally get people asking if I use the nn Meg because of Little Women.
vote up1
Margaret nn Meg was also on our list - and is again if we have another girl. It was inspired by a book but not Little Women. It's inspired by A Wrinkle in Time.I'm not a fan of Little Woman. Alcott hated that book, it's sad that such an accomplished and interesting woman is pigeon holed because of it
vote up1
Ha, I remember wanting to be called Meg when I was younger because of A Wrinkle in Time!
vote up1
I've actually never read the book! *ducks* I want to someday. I've seen a movie of it though, so I do know the story.
vote up1
I enjoy the book. It's a little schmaltzy, but sometimes schmaltzy is good.
vote up1
I second the Rebecca suggestion. I think it'd be great with Benjamin and Margaret.
vote up1
I like Elizabeth "Beth" and Samuel "Sam" the best. Not only are those names gorgeous, they also fit in with the one syllable nn thing you have going and I like consistency! As for suggestions not on your lists, I like Frederick "Fred", Joseph "Joe", Maxwell "Max", Vincent "Vin", Josephine "Jo", Gwendolyn "Gwen", Rebecca "Bec" and Katherine "Kate".
vote up1
I definitely think a third child should have a nickname too. Otherwise, he/she might feel left out if their name didn't have a nickname to go with it like Ben and Meg.Benjamin "Ben", Margaret "Meg," and Rosalie "Rosie" is my favorite for a girl. Benjamin "Ben", Margaret "Meg," and Theodore "Teddy" is my favorite for a boy. If I could choose my own names, I'd go with:Benjamin "Ben", Margaret "Meg," and Eleanor "Ellie" or "Nell" Theodore "Teddy" is already my favorite option for a boy. :D
vote up1
I know, that's one reason I'm like nnngggg about loving names now that don't have nicknames I'd use. Funny story because I think you'd appreciate it (you like video games, right?), the other night I'd mentioned how a few people had named their daughters Samus last year, and my husband was all like I approve of that. If we have another girl we should name her Samus. Or Yuna.FacepalmFortunately, he isn't ACTUALLY serious. But really. Hello, these are my children: Ben, Meg, and Samus. HAHAHAHA

This message was edited 5/10/2015, 6:27 PM

That would be hilarious! Yuna is actually much better than Samus if we're talking about naming a real child. Haha.
