Dorcas v. Tabitha....
I fully understand the modern connotations to the sounds in Dorcas. It's incredibly unfortunate to me. My question below hopes that you might consider Dorcas for it's sound and meaning, and try to separate the "dorky" joke embedded in the name. What do you think of Dorcas versus Tabitha? They both mean "gazelle" and are considered old fashioned. One has a stereotyped sound, while the other has a stereotyped witchy character.
*Note, not for a real child... just a curious question.______________________________________________

We don't use 'dorky' where I live, so it's not an issue.I don't enjoy Doris, Gladys etc - with the exception of Alice, they sound abrupt. So I wouldn't consider it. Tabitha shortens to Tabby, which is very feline. Once again, no doubt it's a cultural thing, I don't find Tabitha remotely witchy. But I far prefer Talitha.

Dorcas and Tabitha are both lovely names and very much unappreciated imo. I am surprised Tabitha hasn't had a resurgence along with other "vintage" and "retro" names, but there's still time I suppose. I do prefer both for mns, but that really has nothing to do with anything other than that I prefer them in the mn spot.

Even if the words "dork" and "ass" did not exist, I would find Tabitha far lovelier in sound than Dorcas.

I love Tabitha. Not crazy about Dorcas.

I prefer Tabitha, it is a much nicer name in my opinion. Dorcas is a name I have never been a fan of, aside from the fact that it has dork as part of the name.

Tabitha all the way for me. Even without the 'dorky' association I'm not a fan of the sound of Dorcas. And I just love Tabitha in general too. Lovely sound, strong and feisty personality, and I actually like 'witchy' sounding names anyway (e.g. Pandora, Morgana, Hermione).

I prefer Dorcas over Tabitha soundwise. Although I'm familiar with Tabitha due to the bewitched association and love it for that, it's not my favorite between the two.
Dorcas, to me is quite beautiful, despite the dorky reference that it's associated with nowadays. It's strong as well and has a bit of a retro vibe in my mind. I'd love to see it used once more but i think it would be minimal use by parents today.

I always got more "orcas" from Dorcas honestly, which still isn't the most pleasant association. Tabitha on the other hand I really love.

Tabitha. I cannot get past the sound of Dorcas. I like Tabitha.

I'm biased on Tabitha; it's my older sister's name (and yes, she was named after said witchy character :P ). I really like the name. It puts me in the mind of a blunt, stubborn, and somewhat hotheaded lady. But she's loyal; she'll fight for you no matter what. When we were younger, my brother and I somehow found out that Dorcas and Tabitha were roughly the same name, so we started teasing our sister by calling her Dorcas. We thought it had the funniest sound ever. Today, though, I actually really like Dorcas (though, surprisingly, more for a boy. I was recently reintroduced to the name on a fictional, strong family man, so now that's all I can think of when I see it).So, I like both names, though I'd definitely be more excited to meet a Dorcas (of either gender), simply because I'm more "exposed" to Tabitha.

My grandmother knew a Dorcas when I was little. It was just an interesting unusual name then, as I don't think 'dork' was a familiar word in the UK until the internet happened. Even in the US it only dates from the 60s, so there are probably still quite a few people with the name around - but much like my cousin Gaye, I doubt anyone's going to be named after them. I actually like the look of it, but that 'ork' sound is awkward.Tabitha is much more usable. I've never heard of a witchy Tabitha so I don't have that association; it seems quite sprightly & domestic somehow, probably because it makes me think of tabby cats and tablecloths.

I like Tabitha. As opposed to being witchy, I think it sounds beautiful and innocent. The sound of Dorcas is unpleasant to me, even putting aside 'dork'.

You can't really consider Dorcas's sound without the dork connection. It's too obvious. Dorcas is ugly, in my and most people's opinion, precisely because of the dork sound, which would sound ugly even if dork wasn't a word; it sounds like a sound effect the Three Stooges might have used.Tabitha is much better. It may be an old name, but it feels much more up-to-date, and is not exclusively associated with Bewitched; same with Samantha.
I don't actually like Tabitha all that much, because of the th sound which I tend to find unappealing, and because it seems like a cat name, but I don't have to think for a minute before I say I'd much rather be a Tabitha than a Dorcas.
