Aaliyah is one of those names that is very pretty in sound, but so culturally specific in spelling. I realize it is far more mainstream than it looks, so it can really be used in many cultures... but the double a really shouts "middle east' to me.

That said, it does work today and it both recognizable and fairly easy to pronounce from the spelling.
