Yeah, it's dated. Sort of like Jordan - the fad is over but still remembered, and the name is still being used. It's more dated as a guy name, than as a girl name IMO (probably because of Fanning?).
Cody seems even more dated to me than Dakota (less likely to be used) - it's especially dated as a girl name, less so as a guy name. If Dakota's an adult I think "unisex." When I hear Dakota nn Cody I think "guy," but if I just hear Dakota and it's a child, I think "probably a girl, maybe a guy."
I don't really like the name because it makes me think of a truck, and because the T sounds so much like a D that it sounds slightly sloppy to me. I don't hate it though. I think it's less tacky as a girl name. Cody is better as a guy name though.
