Re: WDYT???????
A lot depends on the ages and setting. Are they in the modern age, the future, some time in the past? Do they live in America, England, Australia, Germany? Are the parents elderly or are they young parents?I'm just going to assume that this story takes place in modern day America, and that the parents are...mm, late thirties, shall we say?Betheny - Bethany could work for a mother. It's been steadily rising since the fifties; however, I don't think the spelling Betheny would work. I doubt many people were ever given the name with that spelling, and it might be stretching things to give a mother a trendily spelt name.Daniel - Good, solid name that can work on any age. Believable for a father.Ian & Alyssa - I think they work well as a twinset; however, the fact that Alyssa is the only girl without an overtly masculine name could cause confusion. It might be a struggle for readers to remember that it's 3 sons/4 daughters and not 6 sons/1 daughter.Ace - The other boys have very simple, common boy names, so Ace stands out a lot. Doesn't really go with the others.Asa - Too similar to Ace. If I were reading a story with an Ace and Asa sibset, I'd definitely have a hard time remembering who was who. Especially since Asa is a masculine name. Kai - Not very much to say on this one. It wouldn't be my pick, but it doesn't cause much confusion (except perhaps some gender confusion) and may work for the character.Luke - A solid choice that I could see coming from father Daniel and mother Bethany. Might have a hard time fitting in with some of his siblings' names, though. The styles are a bit conflicting.Spencer - See: Kai.
I also believe that names that kind of reflect your characters, and that the names of children should say something about the personality of the parents. Do these names do that for your characters?
