My first impression was that it could be some kind of feminisation of Calum, but I think you're likely to be closer to the mark with the calumba root. Lots of names comes from nature after all. Yes, being American I like that just changing that o to an a turns it into a similar name/word but disassociates it with Colombine.

I actually just looked up Calum and the meaning and history section states "Scottish form of Columba" so they probably are related after all.
