Mara
I've realized over the last couple weeks through other people's posts that I'm becoming a big fan of Mara. What are your thoughts, and do you have any combo suggestions? Thanks!ETA: Also, could Mara be a nickname for Marcella? I want to say yes, but I think it takes away from Mara in its own right... thoughts?

Between the Biblical association and the word 'mar', I've always found Mara so heavy and negative feeling. Whereas Marcella feels much more sunny and upbeat. They are very different in feel for me, so the idea of Mara as a nickname for Marcella is a bit odd. But it does 'work' technically speaking.

Mara is really beautiful, but I don't think it sounds so nice as a nickname for Marcella...Some combos I like: Mara Carmilla (kinda rhymey, but don't judge)Mara Christine Mara AcanthaMara Penelope

I always have to mention that this is my 21-year-old niece's name. I like it well enough, but I wouldn't use it myself.

I love Mara as MAH-ra but don't like MARE-ah or MAA-ra (a as in apple) at all. Marcella doesn't do much for me. I much prefer Mara on its own.Mara Violet
Mara Vivian
Mara Genevieve
Mara Lillian
Mara Noelle
Mara Isabel
Mara Gabrielle
Mara Josephine

Agreed on the pronunciation. :) Thanks!

I'm kind of indifferent to the name. I don't like Marcella but I can see Mara being an acceptable nickname for it. I do think Mara can stand on its own though. I like it paired with stronger names because it does seem a little fragile otherwise.

Love Mara. Simple but elegant. I'm not keen on it as a nickname for Marcella, but I don't like longer frilly names anyway.

Mara could certainly be a nn for Marcella. Or Marian / Marion, Margaret / Margaretta, Marjorie, Martina, Marianna / Mariana, Maryanne, Marigold, Mariabella, Dagmar / Dagmara, or basically any name beginning with or containing 'mar'.Of course Mara's just fine as a standalone given name. :)Combo suggestions:Mara Joy
Mara Josephine
Mara Catherine
Mara Elizabeth
Mara Ruth
Mara Penelope
Mara Juliet
Mara Guinevere / Mara Jennifer
Mara Lois
Mara Jocelyn
Mara Skye
Mara Rosalie
Mara Branwen
Mara Persephone

Mara is lovely in its own right. It has a gentle strength to it that I like. Mara isn't flamboyant or overly popular but it is enduring and timeless. I am not fond of the meaning, but I have heard of an alternate meaning of "exalted." Combos for Mara:
Mara Anastasia
Mara Regina
Mara Lucia
Mara Elizabeth
Mara Isabella
Mara Helene
Mara Gloriana
Mara Grace
Mara Xenia
Mara Clarisse
Mara Adelaide

Mara could definitely be a nickname for Marcella, I think I prefer Marcella to Mara.Mara is one of those two-syllable names that does nothing for me... like Lena, Kara, Dani.I just can't get into them, they have no oomph for me.I do think I like it paired with a 3-syllable middle name, though, if that helps.Mara Elizabeth
Mara Caroline
Mara Adelaide
Mara Cecilia
