I prefer two, first and middle. I like a middle name as further differentiating from others who have the same first name, and I also like them for honoring purposes. But more than one middle name becomes unwieldy, IMO.

Of my three best friends in high school, two did not have middle names. One told me that her parents thought her first and last names together were long enough. I don't know of any particular reason that the other didn't have one.
