Lots of girls here are Mary Whatever (usually a family surname) but they go by both. No one goes by just Mary though.

No, these girls have double first names like Mary Helen or Mary Parker or Mary Caroline or Mary Lawson. Their last names are not included. So Mary Lawson's full name would be Mary Lawson Smith, but she'd just go by Mary Lawson.
