One-syllable _ale-sounding names...
I am pretty obsessed with both the names Gale and Vale lately. I wouldn't use either for personal reasons ( :( ), however, I like the sounds and imagery so much that I searched for similar names. So here is a list of the _ale sounding names in the database and submitted names. What do you think? All of them can be found on BtN, so feel free to search. Masculine:
Cale (Kale, Kael)
Hale, Hail
Lael
Mael
Yale
Bale
Fale
Shale
Rael
Zale
Xael, XaleFeminine:
Vale
Yael
JaelUnisex:
Dale, Dail
Gail, Gale, Gayle

I like Gale (and Gail and Gayle - I have a friend named Gayle). :) While Gale does feel unisex to me (leaning towards masculine, actually), Gail and Gayle feel specifically feminine. Not really sure why.I don't think I'd heard of Vale as a name before, but it's lovely. Sort of a pesudo-equivalent to Glen / Glenn. Oh, and there's Dale as well, for a third...would make a rather "fitting" set of triplets, if not for the rhyming of Dale and Vale - that's probably quite a bit to similar for siblings. Though...you could do Vale, Glen, and Dell. Not that I would irl; but it could work in fiction.I prefer the Dale spelling to Dail by quite a bit. Dail looks like someone was trying to type 'dial' but got the letters in the wrong order.Kale sounds like a vegetable to me, no matter how it's spelled.Spelled Bail (but pronounced the same): Bail Organa from Star Wars, adoptive father of Princess Leia. I think I prefer this spelling to Bale, which makes me think of a bale of hay (though I suppose I should in fact think of Christian Bale).Due to the famous university, I can't see Yale as anything but a surname.I don't have much opinions about the rest except for Shale, which I know the stone golem character in 'Dragon Age: Origins'. While it's certainly a fitting name for a stone golem, I'm not sure how I feel about it on a human - though, one of the teachers at my high school named his son Stone, which I suppose is odder.

Mael, Yael and Jael are all pronounced with two syllables. They are also the only names I like.

I don't care for the "ail" pronunciations of Jael, Yael, Lael, and Mael. And probably Rael. They're ah-el in my mind - almost (not quite) rhyme isle. Can't imagine calling a Yael "Yale" or a Jael "Jail." Regardless, Jael and Yael remind me too much of the words jail, gel, and yell. You forget Baal. Which isn't quite a name for a person, I guess.Dale is my fave. I like it for either sex. People apparently think it's terrible on a woman but I think it could be really very cool. If you don't consider its datedness. I would not mind being named Dale. It's also an OK male name... it's nicely unisex to me, like Dana or Lee or Lynn.Vale would be cool if only there was not the word veil. That wrecks it IMO. Wrecked not quite as badly as Fale and Rale and Mael (prn male) are. Yale is wrecked too, by the school.Cale is not bad. I would not use Kale unless it were kah-leh. I've known a couple of kids named Kane (ka-neh).Hale is decent but I don't really like it. (maybe because of hail, but that doesn't as easily come to mind as veil for Vale)I like Gail (f) - not so much Abigail though.Zale is eccentric but not too bad, nms.

I used to be bothered by vale v. veil too, but then I realized that vale is a noun in itself with much prettier imagery. I still see the connection though. Baal, ha, yeah. I wouldn't have touched that one. I couldn't even imagine someone using it, but I am sure someone would. Also, I totally get the ah-el pronunciation you and Pie mentioned. I already knew that but must have been having a no-brain moment. Yael I especially like as two syllables. Dale is adorable on girls. Not into Abigail, but I like it's history.

Mael and Yael are pronounced mah-el and yah-el: not sure about Lael, but I imagine it's similar.
Cale is kind of nice, but a bit too vegetable-y
Fale would be an uncomfortable name to have!
Dale and Gail are fine, not names I'd choose myself, but perfectly usable.
Do you like Abigail? Most people on here seem to really dislike it, but I think it's okay.

I actually really like Abigail; I didn't realize it was generally disliked - it's lovely!

Same here... Abigail is one of my favorite names!

Fale is pronounced like FAH-leh. Almost like "fallen" without the N.

Not a huge fan of Abigail, but I don't dislike it. I just prefer other names. In fact, I probably like it best BECAUSE of the 'gail' inclusion. Fale looks cool, but I never realized the fail connection when I read it today. Good call.
(I know a Kale... I always thought it a bit too earthy, but his full name is Kalen)
