I don't really object to August on a girl. But I don't really like it as a name. I think the sound is ugly. And Augie is masculine to me, so's Gus ... eh. Gussie? Some women could pull that off.- mirfak

My mother had an aunt who was always called Gustie. (Actual name Augusta.)
Mum's family was given to nick-names and short forms of names, and adding "ie" on if at all possible. I do that sometimes also. The apple didn't fall far from the tree.
