Maxim Adelina - can always abbreviate or shorten to the Adeline pronunciation at will...Ariana or Ariane Ariana-female / Ariane-male (...but not necessarily)Ariane or Arianne I would think Arianne would more easily imply female (but not necessarily)Nathanael or Nathan -- Nathanael as it is more easily shortened by circumstance than lengthenedThorstenKasperDamian or Damien (either/or without preference)Joscelin - would more easily suggest a possible accent on the middle syllable, but not necessarilyAdrienne or Adrianne? ( would tend to think the "e-more male" / "a--more female" AthenaCharis JohannaMadeleineVictoria

thank you! I recorded everyone's responses, it was very interesting for me. I would like to do more with the data when I figure out how (e.g. work out if there is any correlation between preferences for particular names). But so far, I have worked out the most preferred (from the ones with the biggest bias to the smallest)Athena
Casper
Victoria
Carys
Jocelyn
Madeleine
Adrienne
Maxim
Adeline
Damian
Nathanael
Ariana
Ariane
Thorsten
Johanna

Maxim, because the "ks" looks very foreign and people would spell him Maxim anywaysAdeline or Adelina, can't decide on this one, sorry! I like them both! Adeline looks more classic, but Adelina has something noble about it as wellAriana, because I dislike the sound of Ariane... it sounds quite serious and stiffArianne, for the same reason as I prefer ArianaNathanael, this one is tough because I also really like Nathan. But Nathaniel (!) looks more completeThorsten, sorry I really loathe this one! Thorsten doesn't sound as hard anymore due to the "th"Casper, because Kasper looks much older and reminds me of a Germansynonym for "clown"Damian, because Damien looks misspelledJocelyn, even though I don't like this one, too... isn't Joscelin a boys name? And it sounds weird... makes me mumbleAdrianne, definitely not my cup of tea, but Adrienne reminds too much like Adrian, as to soundAthena, although I like Athene, too, but the -e ending wouldn't make a good first nameCarys, not particularly liking any of the two, but Charis looks weird to me somehow.Johanna, for sure! Joanna is over-usedMadeline, because I like -line names and I don't like Madeleine's "ei"Victoria, not a fan of it, but Vittoria looks and sounds weird, sorry

Maksim, because it's less maxi-pad like
Adeline, but I love both so tough call!
Ariana, because I feel like Ariane could be misheard as Aryan, and I'd want to avoid even the slightest possible connection
Nathaniel and then Nathanael, because Nathan is boring
Thorsten - looks more complete to me
Casper, because I just generally prefer Cs to Ks
No preference - I don't like either
Joscelin - less trendy looking
Again, no preference, although I do pronounce them differently, I don't like either
Athena, because Athene is incomplete, and would be mistaken for Athena all the time anyway
Carys, because I always want to say Charis with a Ch- sound, and it's ugly with a Ch- sound
Joanna, because I pronounce them differently and I prefer the Joanna prn.
Madeline. Ditto the different pronunciations.
Vittoria, because I can't stand Vicky.

Maxim or Maksim? - MaximAdeline or Adelina? - AdelineAriana or Ariane? - neitherAriane or Arianne? - neitherNathanael or Nathan? (if you prefer the Nathaniel spelling, just replace Nathanael with it) - neitherThorsten or Torsten? - TorstenCasper or Kasper? - Casper, though I wouldn't call it liking, exactlyDamian or Damien? - Damien, I suppose, since I like the two I know and I've never met a Damian. But Damian's OK.Jocelyn or Joscelin? - JocelynAdrienne or Adrianne? - neither, but Adrian for a boy is goodAthene or Athena? - as a name, neither; as a goddess, AtheneCharis or Carys? - Carys, for ease of pronunciationJoanna or Johanna? - Joanna; too many elderly Johannas where I liveMadeleine or Madeline? - neither, but Madeline is a family name, so ...Victoria or Vittoria? - Victoria

Yay! I love Nathanael, and Jocelyn / Joscelin is for a boy, yes.
I should probably have written in the original post that they aren't all just spelling preferences.

Maxim or Maksim? - can I say neither? haha um, I really go back and forth on this one. Maxim because you can shorten to Max, but Maksim because it doesn't remind me as much as a Maxi pad. so...Maksim I guess!Adeline or Adelina? - Adeline Ariana or Ariane? - ArianaAriane or Arianne? - ArianneNathanael or Nathan? (if you prefer the Nathaniel spelling, just replace Nathanael with it) - NathanielThorsten or Torsten? - either, but maybe Thorsten a bit more?Casper or Kasper? - Caspar. but otherwise, Kasper.Damian or Damien? - DamianJocelyn or Joscelin? - Joscelin if a boy, Jocelyn if a girl (or Joscelyn)Adrienne or Adrianne? - I pronounce these differently, so if you're thinking the ad-ree-EN version, I'd go with Adrienne.Athene or Athena? - AthenaCharis or Carys? - Carys Joanna or Johanna? - again, I pron. these differently. I like Johanna better.Madeleine or Madeline? - ditto. and while I like both, I'd choose Madeleine.Victoria or Vittoria? - Vittoria

Maxim - in a vacuum, I prefer Maxim because it is more familiar. People tend to get confused by the KS I've noticed. Personally though, I prefer Maksim, because I hate Max because of a personal association and a boy named Maksim could be Mak instead. Adeline - No real reason, I just prefer the sound. Ariane - I find a lot of the -ana names too frilly for my taste, this is no aception. Ariane - I know someone who has this name, so it looks more correct to me. Nathaniel - Something about Nathan is just really dull to me, I like both Nathaniel and Jonathan, but Nathan on it's own is really boring to me.Thorsten - I just like the look better. Casper - Where I live replacing C's with K's is fairly common and pretty downmarket. I don't think most people would know Kasper was legit and would think I'd made the spelling up. I also prefer Caspar to Casper. Damien - I prefer the French pronunciation. Joscelin - Just prefer the look. Adrienne - Adrianne looks wrong to me, and I want to pronounce it with a prominent -Anne sound. Athena
CarysJohanna - Not really the same name in my opinion, they are pronounced completely differently. Johanna is so pretty.Madeleine - just looks so regal, and I prefer the pronunciation. Victoria

Maxim or Maksim? - neither really, but I appreciate the simplicity of Maxim a bit more. Adeline or Adelina? - Tough! I prefer Adeline. Ariana or Ariane? - Ariane. It seems stronger somehow. Ariane or Arianne? - Ariane, it's just simpler. Nathanael or Nathan? (if you prefer the Nathaniel spelling, just replace Nathanael with it) - Hmm, Nathan. Thorsten or Torsten? - Throsten. The Tor is a bit off-putting for me. Casper or Kasper? - Casper. Damian or Damien? - Damien. The e is more handsome. Jocelyn or Joscelin? - Jocelyn, by far. Adrienne or Adrianne? - Adrienne. So much prettier in look and sound. Athene or Athena? - Athena, just because it is more recognizable. Though, Athene is much more solid and mature. Charis or Carys? - Carys.Joanna or Johanna? - Joanna. I like the sound better. Madeleine or Madeline? - Madeleine, I guess. They both work to me. Victoria or Vittoria? - Victoria, simply because I think Vicki is quirky.
