I just read about a Swedish girl who bears the name Lavibelle, constructed from French la vie est belle, "life is beautiful".
I think it's an awful name. WDYT?

Interesting but don't like. Sounds like a play on "loveable." And makes me think of lavatory.

That's right, it is really awful. I think this construct makes a really bad name, because: It doesn't sound like the sentence on which it is based (the "est" sound is completely missing and like this, it sounds wrong). Also (the from others already mentioned) 'lavabo' comes to my mind..
I have some problems to understand, why swedish parents want to name their daughter after a sentence in another language... This doesn't sound clever ^^

My first thought was that it reminds me of "lavatory" it also sounds like someone with a strong accent saying "laughable".

The word we usually use in Swedish for lavatory is toalett, but almost everyone knows English, so it's not impossible that some people would associate Lavibelle with lavatories. It's more unusual to know French, actually. Nowadays most students choose to study Spanish, German or even Chinese as their third language (I chose French, though; when I went to school during the Middle Ages ;) you could only choose between French and German).

Lavatory is not that common in the US anymore, at least where I live. The last I heard it was when we called bathrooms "Lavs" in school (early 90s).
I tried to use Lav or Lavoratory a couple years ago and no one knew what I was talking about.

I'm pretty sure airplane bathrooms are still referred to as lavatories.

Meh, the meaning is kind of endearing. It's a nice sentiment at least.
Personally, Lavibelle makes me think Lavabo makes me think bathroom. Plus I hate -belle names.

That's just... Well, awful. Not only do I hate the idea, it's also an ugly name with a very unpleasant sound and look.

Lava Bell and lavatory are all that come to mind. Can't say that I like it, but at least they contracted the phrase and didn't use the whole thing as a name (I'm looking at you, Je t'aime).

Reminds me of the Je t'aime in my class... what is it about the French language that makes people want to name their kids after it?
Naming a kid after a foreign language phrase will make it hard for them to travel in that country. Especially in Europe-- jeez, they speak French everywhere there!
If I were to give my child a "life is beautiful" kind of name, I would go for Vivian Belle.

Vivian Belle is very pretty. Nice alternative.
I agree with your post. I love French, but I would rather use a French NAME, not a phrase or word (well, except Renard, which I am slightly in love with).
