HelpBoy Names for Last Name Smith
Hi all,
My wife and I have our first baby on the way. It's a boy and we've come up with a short list of possible names, but we just can't seem to settle on one. Our last name is Smith, so we're looking for something that fits. I'd like to get some impressions without telling others we know, so I'm hoping some of you could provide feedback. What do you think, from our shortlist below, or off the top of your head?

Throwing my hat in for Roger. It's the most unique of the bunch, which one needs with a surname like Smith. Plus, the world needs more little Roger's running around!
Jonah Smith would be my second choice. Very fun, like a play on John Smith as others have said.
Evan and Henry tie for third. I think they're both snappy-sounding with Smith.
Caleb is a great name even if it's common, but I think the B somehow sounds too heavy with Smith, like the whole name is being dragged down.
Jacob Smith has the same problem as Caleb, except that Jacob is even more popular than Caleb and has the potential to get the nickname Jake, which I dislike.
Roger Smith is wonderful.

I think all sound fine with Smith (most names go with Smith tbf)
Jonah is nice and not all that common.
Jacob is okay, but very popular. I like Jacob Smith but not such a fan of Jake Smith if he is going to be known as Jake
Caleb is nice enough
Henry I really like and I like the sound of Henry Smith - this would be my choice
Roger I dislike - It sounds dated and I just think of people saying I'd Roger her as in I'd sleep with her. I just can never get that out my head with Roger, plus Roger rabbit
Evan Smith is fine, but it just lacks interest. I just find Evan a bit dull in generally, weird because I love Ewan which is pretty similar.
If I had to order from most favourite to least i'd go with...
Henry Smith
Jonah Smith
Jacob Smith
Caleb Smith
Evan Smith

I like Jonah best. The others are too generic, not that being generic is too terrible.

I think all of those names sound find with Smith. Smith is a good last name to have as it suits almost any first name :)

Jacob is a lovely name but is incredibly common, especially to go with a very common surname. Jacob has been in the top 10 in the US for about 20 years, and was number 1 for a very long time. There will be millions of people called Jacob Smith.
Roger is the only one I don't like as it sounds a bit old in my opinion - the only Roger I know is in his 80s. However, plenty of "old fashioned" names are getting more popular, so it could well be that Roger is coming up next!

I would avoid Jacob Smith because it is such a common first and last name combination.
As for the others,
Jonah Smith - Very nice, I like the name Jonah a lot. It's almost like a fun play on John Smith! This gets my vote.
Caleb Smith - Caleb is not my favorite name, but I do like the nickname Cale.
Henry Smith - Very distinguished and gives me revolutionary vibes. I like it.
Roger Smith - Roger is my second place vote among the list. Roger needs a comeback! I think it's fun and rugged.
Evan Smith - Evan is kind of boring in comparison to these other names. I think it had its hay day about 15 years ago and could easily be blended in with other trendy-ish names.

On to the names...
My favorite of your list is Roger. I find it underused for such a dusty old gem. It's a bit "old man" still, but that is what makes it so quirky and fun. I truly do love Roger and was bummed when my own husband vetoed the name.
Roger Smith flows well and is a refreshing choice for the common Smith surname.
To address each name:
Jonah Smith - Works. It's almost like "Oh, you thought I was going to say John? Surprise!". Jonah is a solid choice and I have found myself suggesting it to people in real life lately. The similarity to John might be a bit cliché for you, but I think this works just fine.
Jacob Smith - This is ok, but I feel more like it is "eh" rather than great. It reminds me of those Hallmark movies set in the Old West, in which the kind elderly bachelor named Jacob helps out everyone in town. Sorry. Jacob is a fantastic name on it's own. Very solid and classic. However, pairing it with Smith takes it down a notch.
Caleb Smith - This has almost the same vibe as Jacob, except that I quite like it. I do usually take issue to the meaning of Caleb (dog), but the biblical history of the name almost always makes up for the meaning. This is a standard choice, but a good one.
Henry Smith - Not a fan. Henry is an ok name, but it's quite common with the surname Smith. It's also a lot softer in sound than the other choices on your list. I think that because the sound of Smith is so smooth and soft, that you should stick with a first name that uses bolder sounds (like Ks, hard Cs, Ts, Vs, Gs, etc).
On to the names...
