I don't mind it on either, actually. When I first hear it, though, I think boy.

boy's....butI'd only use it on a boy, but I know that it's creeping up in usage for girls. It's becoming trendy for families that like unisex names (Morgan, Dana, Avery, Quinn) or boys names on girls in general (Gracyn, Addison, Payton, Ashton) and also for last-names-as-first-names on girls (which are also typically used for boys first) (Riley, Madison, Mackenzie - I've even seen Finnegan and Lincoln being thrown around lately, etc.)So....if you want to use it for a girl, you might get some head-turns, but in a few years there might be several female Finns running around. Anything with a Y in it is tending to get "stolen" to the girls' side. If you want it for a boy, no problems there. It's not yet considered a girls' name (as I think you can see by all the comments)Also, it fits with your other kids' names in style so either way they'll all seem to match.

BoyIt's a GP of mine to like it on a girl, but in real life I would never expect a Finley to be female and if one was I'd probably cringe.

Both. Facts: Decidedly more popular for a girl. But historically a boys name, I believe.
Opinions: I much prefer it on a boy!

Definitely A Masculine NameI personally think it sounds extremely masculine and could never imagine it on a girl. It certainly wouldn't be out of place on a girl these days, though, what with all of the "unisex" names in use, but I still wouldn't advise it. I'd love to meeet a little girl named Fionnuala / Finola, though.

MaleIts a male name, but like every other name in the male word it somehow will eventually translate over to a female name as people really feel that a male name makes a girl more spunky and cool for some reason. James, Avery, Morgan, etc etc have all been stolen from males. I just don't understand, with the amount of legit female names and even constantly made up female names, that one must also steal a male name. It just doesn't make sense to me. But, whatever, just my two cents.

I guess I'd say I'm more familiar with it as a female name, but considering the brothers' names, all bets are off. It's so ambiguous it seems contrived.

Male. Where I live it's actually a surname and I see surnames more fitting for boys than girls.

BothIt's originally masculine, but it sounds feminine to many people and they use it for their daughters. I prefer it on a boy, with the Finlay spelling.

I would have thought masculine, but BtN lists Finley for both - apparently it's currently ranked #223 for girls (and #373 for boys) in the US.

Ugh. If the US does to Finley what it did to Ashley, I'm going to be very upset.

It's a masculine name. I prefer the Finlay spelling.
