Ah! I would love to meet a DW these days.
I think initial nicknames are totally fine. I had a very good friend named William Theophilus, and he went by BT.
My mom calls my dad CJ (Charles Joseph), though no one else does. He calls her BB. This is probably why I call my husband JP affectionately sometimes.
I guess for me, they seem like cutesy nicknames... but they can age well.
I would do it myself (mostly for a boy) if it worked out with decent letters.
TJ and JD seem like the standards, and AJ is probably the most common. CC I hear a lot for girls, but the rest I rarely hear or see.
