HelpRe: Dashiell Hammett Character Names

A lot of the names sound weirdly whimsical for detective novels. I've never read any of them though, I'm sure they fit the characters.
Cora, Creda, Bruno, and Edouard are just O.K., kinda blah.
I really like Elvira, Inés, Enid, and Miriam.
Kewpie makes for a really weird and intriguing character name. I'm immediately reminded of those creepy little Kewpie dolls!
Archibald and Burke make me think the characters are stuck-up, yacht-owner types. They sound detective-y too!
Bunky must be a child character. Makes me think of a Huck Finn type.
Tai, Lew, and Frana are just odd, I don't know what to make of them.
Hook just reminds me of Captain Hook.
Dolph and Madden make me think of burly, weight-lifter dudes.
