Name a tortoise!
Long story short, I've discovered that pet tortoises are still a thing. I'm usually completely against buying from pet stores, but I visited a pet centre the other day and saw this *stupidly cute* little pet tortoise that is smaller than my hand and I think I melted a little bit. Getting a pet is a big commitment and I'm not going to go ahead and buy one before I know more about looking after tortoises and their needs, and check out vet stuff and how much keeping a tortoise is and all the things I'll need to buy, and get a cushion of cash in case the little guy needs to go to the vet etc... but I really want a tortoise and I've already got a name list for if/when I get once. What do you think of the following?Hieronymus
Jeremy
Hercules
Vladimir / Vladislav "Vlad"
Cornelius
Ignatius
Genghis
Isambard "Sam"
Bartleby
Jasper / Casper (I think this more of a cat/dog/person name)
Montgomery "Monty"
Otto
Mikhail "Misha" / Yuriy (honouring heroes, but I'd want to use these for kids or cats/dogs if I ever have them)
Dmitriy "Dima" (I love this name but probs could never use it)
Ptolemy
Bartholomew
Ludwig
Wolfgang
Zebulon "Zeb"Basically, I like big important names on little tortoises. At the minute, my faves are, in order:
Isambard
Cornelius
Genghis
Hercules
Ludwig
Wolfgang
Ptolemy
If I get a girl tortoise.... I have no idea. Suggestions?
I'm thinking maybe Gertrude, Winifred... I have no idea. So, what do you guys think?

I like Hieronymus best. Or Hildegarde, nn Hildy?
My grandparents had one for over 30 years, who lived in their garden. They hibernate, at least in countries with cold winters - he was carefully packed away in a box full of straw at the end of every autumn, and brought out in the spring. He loved bread and milk - and slugs:)

I think Hercules would be a good name for a tortoise.

What a marvellous list! What about Eustacia for a girl one? You could call her Stacy, especially as she'd be likely to stay in one place a lot. Or Iphigenia - lots of nn possibilities there. When I was about eleven, I got given two tortoises by a random little old lady who had to move out of her house and couldn't keep them. I looked up shell curvature etc and with stunning originality named them Tommy and Tessa. They lived happily in our garden till we also had to move, and then we liberated them on the mountainside, where they could well be to this day.

I highly recommend Fluffy. This was the name of our female tortoise. If you don't like Fluffy how about Ruffle or Petal?

Haha, I thought you'd say that when I saw you replied! Vladislav is after a film I love, and because it sounds tough and OTT. Vladislava sounds really sparkly and rich, all diamond-y and frosty... it's pretty, but might it be too pretty, polished and professional sounding for a wee little frumpy tortoise. It's a little too cool.
