Which one
Having 2nd thoughts (well.. at this point it's actually possibly 50th, 60th or 70th thoughts... lol) about our name choices.I think i've been a bit swayed because my grandmother voiced her love of two of the names.. One of the middle names will be Hilda. Pick one: Daphne
Winifred
Theodora
Edwina

Daphne, but Theodora is pretty, too

Daphne!Definitely Daphne. It's spunky and cute, modern yet classic. Winifred would be my second choice because I love the NN Winnie. Theodora would be third , and Edwina a distant last place. Its frumpy and the wee sound puts me off.Have DH list the names in order, and you order them too. Imagine yelling the name across a playground, that was most helpful for me. Or saying it sternly when they're in trouble. Or saying it playfully. Or all three. Visualizing actual usage of the name. Then compare your lists and see which name is at the top of both. It's normal to have cold feet about a name just before birth. But a long loved name is likely to fit the child well imo. Would you regret not using a name if you don't have another child?

I think Theodora is the most versatile. Winifred is the name of your 80 year old school librarian--and not in a cool way. Edwina is your 80 year old librarian's bff. The one with 14 cats who may also be a hoarder. I feel like Daphne has been the one forever and you'll regret it if you never get to use it.

Theodora definitely.

Theodora!! I love love love Theodora. It's one of my favorite names. It's not stuffy and frilly. It's a bit heavier but gorgeous with a lot of nickname potential. Love Theodora. Theodora
Winifred
Edwina

I love both Daphne and Winifred :)

Daphne, definitely!it just flows best with Hilda, and I don't really care for the others. I hope she gets here soon, and have a safe delivery!

DaphneI really can't picture any of the others on a real person. And Daphne is just so bright and happy, it stands out in a good way.

In order:Daphne
Theodora
Edwina

WinifredEdwina might well be in second place, except my nephew has a pug named Edwina who is known informally as Weena or even WeeWee.

DaphneI also like Winifred - it's cheery and Winnie and Win are both good nns, but Daphne is shorter & sweeter and more elegant imo.
Theodora is too long and frilly and saccharine for my liking. The only Theodora I knew hated it with a passion, which has probably influenced me a bit, and the a-ending sounds off with an A last name. Edwina has the same problem, plus I don't like the prominent wee sound. I do like Eddy though, and if you have a family Edwin it would make a nice middle name.

TheodoraTheodora, hands down. I love it, it's so much better than the other ones and it's got some great nicknames you could use.

Theodora!Theodora is awesome.
I've never liked the ending sound in names like Daphne, Phoebe, Esme etc. They have a nasal sound that bothers me a lot and they kind of sound like you have a cold. So that's my reason behind not liking Daphne which of course doesn't (and shouldn't) matter to you. To be honest I would prefer all the other names over Daphne. Sorry!

Theodora, hands downDaphne is okay but has the Daffy nickname, while Winifred and Edwina are the sorts of musty old lady names that were ugly when I was a kid but now hipsters are using.

Theodora, NN Thea or Theo. But that's just me.

TheodoraIt just has the biggest pluses and the smallest minuses.
I like Daphne and Edwina almost as well.

Daphne and Theodora are much better than the rest.

Winifred! It's my absolute favorite female name.My second choice would be Edwina, followed closely by Theodora, followed more distantly by Daphne.

Theodora. Is there any way you'd consider Theodosia? It takes the best of Theodora and softens it, IMO.

More opinions might make your decision tougher! :)I think Daphne and Winifred are both adorable. Winnie is so sweet. I'm going to pick Winifred.Theodora and Edwina are too harsh IMO. I'd pick Dorothea over all of these, though.

Please, please, PLEASE take Edwina & Winifred off your list. It seems like you're trying to prove a point of how "cool you are" rather than thinking about the child having to deal with those names. They are old, there is nothing redeemable about them and I can't imagine calling a toddler them! I'm sorry to be harsh, but it's my opinion.I love Daphne. I think it's sweet, old-fashioned and still relevant. I know a young Daphne and it suits her. Theodora is old-fashioned but still more approachable than Edwina or Winifred.

Hmm.. maybe it's just me but I don't see it at all. Winifred has probably gotten the worst reaction out of all our names, but I honestly struggle to see why no one likes it.. Winnie seems so sweet for a little girl or a baby, Fred seems spunky/quirky for a teenager. It does just seem like a really sweet and pretty name to me. I'm definitely not trying to point out 'how cool we are'... otherwise i'd go with something more popular.. Winifred is actually a name used in both our families, husbands grandmother's middle name is Winifred and my grandfathers aunt was Winifred (sister to Ethel and Oswald) so that is where I kinda got it from.Edwina kinda came to us because both of us have grandfathers with Ed names (Edmund and Edward). I have known one Edwina. The other thing that makes it a bit more mainstream is there is a childrens book called Edwina the Emu.
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/535842.Edwina_the_EmuI don't mind 'harsh' opinions, i'd prefer people to be honest because it then makes me think more critically of our name choices! So thanks! :)

Winnie is sweet. Winifred isn't. Also, namenerds are different when they try to be cool - I've noticed that it's in to chose the oddest, most different names that "no one else has." Aine explained that Edwina has a much different vibe in Australia, which I understand. But with Winifred- it's really the fred part. I can't get past how grating it sounds, nor can I imagine a young person being named Winifred. I feel the same way about Ethel, it's time is gone. I think it's a name that will die out. I think it's important to think about how a child's name will affect them.I do understand loving a name and wanting to use it. If my husband would let me I'd use Solveig in an instant, and it's quite a mouthful. And my daughter would probably never forgive me, honestly. :-/

I love Winifred. I think it's a great name with a cute sound.

Agree. I think Winifred is adorable. I'd use it more as a middle name, but I think it'd be sweet as a first.

In Bex's defence, Edwina is decently common in Australia. Not outrageously common but it is a name you definitely see around across all age groups. It very much fits into that category of name that everyone knows how to pronounce/spell and has likely seen before but you're unlikely to ever be in a workplace, group of friends or class with more than one Edwina. I don't personally like Edwina but it wouldn't be a hindrance to a kid growing up in Australia. I think Winifred would be looked at by most non-name nerds in Australia as unfathomably ugly and I wouldn't want a name that was thought of as that ugly by others myself. But yeah, Edwina and Winifred aren't on the same level of irredeemable where we come from :)
vote up1
OKThat is much different than in the US, for Edwina. Winifred...still no. :-D
vote up1
I'd pick Theodora personally. I've never met a Theodora in real life and it is so beautiful and classy without being frilly and weak. I also love all the nickname options that you and she can choose from depending on what suits- Teddy, Thea, Dot, Dottie, Dora, Dory, Theo, Tee etc. I know how much you guys love Winifred and I think Winnie is quite spunky but Winifred is one of those names that I see as "ugly but cool". I'm not sure I'd have the guts to name my daughter something that many non-name nerds will definitely find very unattractive. Great middle name though.I like Daphne. Lack of nickname besides Daffy may be an issue in Australia? I know my friends and family shorten everything. I might try and get ahead of that one by using the nickname Dee personally. I do think it is a good name and you have loved it for so long that you should use it if it 'feels right'.I've known a bunch of Edwinas- I've actually never met anyone with the other three names. It feels comfy to me because I can readily see it on a real person but the 'ween' sound is whiney to me. I've always found it unattractive myself but there is nothing wrong with it objectively.

Daphne. I think that it is elegant and will age well.

Daphne! I will not budge on my decision because it's a beautiful name and as I've said before, you guys obviously love it if you keep coming back to it. My parents have a Daphne bush by their front door, which is currently flowering and smelling divine and as I walked past it this morning, I thought of you and wondered if you would go back to the name! Daphne Hilda does flow really nicely too. What will the second mn be?
vote up1
At the moment if we go with Daphne then the full name will be Daphne Winifred Hilda.I'm not sure what we would go with for the others.
Maybe
Winifred Daphne Hilda
Edwina Daphne Hilda
Theodora Dapne Hilda /Theodora Winifred HildaI just don't know if Daphne excites me anymore.. I am wondering whether now i'm leaning towards Theodora a bit more because of being able to use Theo/Dora/Teddy as a nickname, where as Daphne doesn't have the same nickname potential..
It's so hard when your naming an ACTUAL baby! It could also be that i'm bored as hell waiting for this baby to arrive! Since we've finished the nursery there is nothing left for me to build or paint lol.
vote up1
Haha, yeah, you probably have way too much time on your hands to think at the moment! Maybe because you've been somewhat set on Daphne for years, the prospect of actually having a real baby to name is making you question the name altogether?! You will know what to name her when you see her, just enjoy your last bit of time before she arrives :)
