Yes, very much. At one stage, at my girls-only school, there were I think five Barbara people, a Deborah and a Desiree in a class of 30. The teachers fell apart: "Barbara, stop talking.' 'I wasn't talking.' 'Not you, the Barbara behind you.' 'But I'm Deborah.' You can imagine. The years above and below us didn't contain a single one, so all those parents must have been a very ... interesting bunch.Nicknames were very necessary. There was one who was always just Barbara, a Barbie, a Bibi and a Babs, and the other one was Rendie because of her ln. Barbara seemed fine but long, Barbie was and is ghastly, Bibi was quite bright and perky but didn't age well, and Babs seemed perfect.
