But why do people reply to trolls? Make fun of them, sure, but you don’t need to tell them or anyone else that they’re a troll or cringe worthy or whatever. I thought it was the rule of thumb here to not reply to spam or trolls in order to stop them coming back?

What fascinates me is,
they're so innocent. They don't expect to be called out or even spotted. Being them must be a little bit like being the first person ever to paint a moustache on the Mona Lisa. But they do clog up the boards, and they might as well grow up, so calling them out doesn't offend me. I'd prefer to see subtlety at work, but I don't think they're (usually anyway) old enough to identify it for what it is.

This is why I have gravitated almost entirely to the name polls in recent years.
There are just too many bratties here ready to attack at any moment. Who needs that dampening their mood? What does it have to do with names? Visit us at the polls anytime for a comment-free reprieve!

What are you talking about? We definitely have way less than one troll per month.

Trolls can be fun. Especially trolls who try to start drama with multiple of their personas rather than bothering other people who are trying to have legitimate discussions. Plus it is the internet, it's impossible to completely avoid trolls. This type of troll is much preferable to the racist inflammatory trolls who are good at pretending to not be trolls who you often see.

I reply to them because I don't mind them at all. I think they liven things up. I've never understood why I'm supposed to get purple with rage when a troll appears.

No, I get that, but it’s when people just reply by telling them they’re trolls and saying “oh another bored/sad person trying to get attention” or telling them how eye roll worthy they are. It just seems kind of void! I also don’t mind them much and I don’t get why it bothers people enough to reply seriously.

I have been here for eight years, and I have never, not even once, seen a troll be completely ignored. Spam, sure, but never trolls like this one.

I don’t think we can resist, haha. Sometimes it’s just fun to see what people will do. Probably not the best possible course of action, but funny.
