Skadi and Freya - I need some people from Scandinavia to answer (and everyone else too!) :D
Hey :)The name Skadi has caught my attention recently. I think it's really cute. She was a mountain giantess in Norse mythology associated with winter and skiing which seems kind of neat. However her name seems to mean 'to damage/destroy'. If you are from Scandinavia, can you guess that meaning when you hear the name? Is the name similar to a word in your language that bears this meaning? I'm just a bit worried it might have really bad associations in Scandinavian countries or sound really weird. Would anyone in your country use Skadi? It doesn't seem to have made any popularity lists.Question for all of you: do you like the name?I also like Freya. I think I slightly prefer Freja but Freya is more international. How is this pronounced in your country? Is it more like FRAY-ah or FREH-ya or is it FRY-ah? Just wondering because I met a German girl named this who pronounced it FRY-a but I always thought it was FREH-ya.Do you like Freya?

Skadi is pretty close to the word Skade [Skah-deh], which means "damage" in Danish and Norwegian. I didn't notice it before you mentioned it, but I guess I would have seen it pretty soon anyways. It kind of sounds like a masculine Icelandic name to me. The name is pretty interesting and unfamiliar, because I've never heard anything of this figure when we were thaught about Norse Mythology in Primary School. Freya is usually pronounced similarly to FRAY-ah in Norway, but FREH-yah is not too far off either. I've never heard anyone pronounce it FRY-a, so that might be the German way of pronouncing it. I'm actually more used to Frøya. The ø is pronounced similarly the i in "bird".

Thank you! I guess the character is not very well known then. I'm happy Freya is pronounced that way, I have met a few German girls who pronounced it like FRY-a and I really didn't like that pronunciation very much.

From Sweden.
I've never even heard the name Skadi. It's an obscure name. I think I know my Norse mythology pretty well and that is not a name I've come across. I think most people here wouldn't even know it's a name.
I'm not sure I would guess the meaning but knowing it, it's kind of obvious. 'Skada' is the Swedish word for hurting or damaging someone or something.
I can't say I'm a fan of the name. It's sounds pretty harsh. My dislike doesn't have anything to do with the meaning though.
Freja/Freya is FREH-ya just like you say it. There is no other way to pronounce it here.

Thank you! I guess she isn't a very prominent character in Norse mythology then. I think the name is too dark for me anyway but I sometimes think it's kind of cute. Same with Kali, which has a very dark background as well.
