Re: -ian names

Vivian - I like it. It's very firm and forceful. I like it on either gender. I prefer it spelled Vivien for a girl/woman though.
Adrian - I like it (boy). A favorite. Handsome but never a fop.
Cyprian - It's theoretical as a name, to me, as I've never heard of anyone named it. I knew a guy who was called the Cyprian as a nickname among his friends, because he was literally from Cyprus.
Caspian - I like it alright, and sort of wish it were more of a name and not just a location
Marian - dated but likeable. either gender but I would expect F
Dorian - nms somehow. I normally like these sounds but Dorian seems so bland to me.
Ian - I like it. It's gotten sort of generic.
Florian - too flowery for my taste as a guy name, but I think it'd make a good name for women.
Lucian - I sort of like it prn Lu-shun, and even then, I'm ambivalent.
Fabian - fayb / fab / fob sound is unappealing to me.
Hadrian - not as cool as Adrian but ok
Vespasian - is just the one guy. As a baby name it's like Poseidon or Hannibal or something, ott.
Sebastian - it's ok. Nms but I think it's pretty nice. Don't like any of the nicks, though.
Julian - I like it. A favorite. M
Finnian - nmsaa.
Ninian - eccentric and kinda cool but "ninny" bothers me. F
others that come to mind easily, I'm not in love with any
Gratian
Aurelian
Valerian
Christian
Sylvian
Cillian / Killian
Rillian / Rilian
Maximilian
Gillian
Rhydian
Damian

I don't know if this helps, but I always think of this name as coming from yes, the name of the sea, but also coming from the name of the caspia plant (also called "limonium").
And the name of the sea and the name of the plant have nothing to do with one another so that gives it more substance, I think.
Oh, it's sea-lavender. That neutralizes my dislike of it, at least.
