Why isn’t George too popular here?
I was looking through past and current polls and I noticed there’s not much love for the name George around here. I don’t get it, it’s a strong, traditional, timeless name that lasted generations and spans dozens of cultures. At first, I thought “Maybe it’s just too common and people are tired of it”, but then I noticed that James and Alexander receive never ending love and those are some of the most overused and plaid-out names in existence. So what exactly is wrong with George?

Personally, I don't think it sounds appealing at all. On top of that, I find it quite stuffy. Very royal-British. Not that stuffy and the royal family names go hand in hand, just my two impressions hearing the name)

I’ve just never liked it. It has no personality to me and it sounds abrupt and brusque. However, I do like Georgie and Georgiana — the extra syllables soften the name.

If you look at the name usage charts in the USA, George is rather dated. It hasn’t yet reached a revival period, and it is too familiar to be retro. While I appreciate figures like George Washington and like the myth of St. George and the dragon, I find George stodgy and dull. Plenty of people share your opinion of James and Michael, but they are classic names that have never really gone out of style. Personally, I like the sound and feel of both names, but I probably wouldn’t use either due to their popularity.

Here in South Africa, I've never met a George who wasn't Greek. Except a friend of my mother's, who was actually Freda but got everyone to call her George - decades before Harry Potter, and she was straight and married-with-kids.I don't mind George at all, but I wouldn't use it because I much prefer Georgina for a girl.

In my opinion, George is the bald, short, fat, annoying guy from Seinfeld and so I can’t get past that image. I know it’s popular in Britain, but it’s not very popular here in the US.

i honestly think it might be George Bush? i think the average age for posters here is late 20s or so, and many posters here are American, so he's the first president many of them remember/could form an opinion on. i asked my partner once what she thought of the name George, since it's a common name in my family, and she had a low opinion of it because the George Bushes were the first to come to mind. which makes sense, considering again how he'd be the first president people our age would remember, and how many other recently famous Georges pop into your head? it's common, sure, but not near on the same level as James or Alexander. i've never met a George in my age group

I personally just don't really like the sound. It also strikes me as really British seeming, more so than James or Alexander, and I'm from the US, so maybe that plays a part in why I don't like it as much? (Not that I generally dislike names that seem more British, but I probably wouldn't choose to use one.)

I love it and would happily use it. Top 3 name.

...really? I think it's actually pretty popular here. One of the semi-regular posters even recently named a son George.I like George more than James and Alexander, although I'd say Alexander is more classic. George isn't a personal favorite of mine, but I'm fond of it.Maybe George has more of a distinct character/vibe than Alexander or James because it hasn't been used as frequently in recent years (at least in the US, where many posters live), so that makes it more polarizing...it's also associated with Prince George, a celebrity baby; that could make it seem trendy, which lots of people dislike.

George doesn’t really have a good sound to me.
