If you look at the name usage charts in the USA, George is rather dated. It hasn’t yet reached a revival period, and it is too familiar to be retro. While I appreciate figures like George Washington and like the myth of St. George and the dragon, I find George stodgy and dull. Plenty of people share your opinion of James and Michael, but they are classic names that have never really gone out of style. Personally, I like the sound and feel of both names, but I probably wouldn’t use either due to their popularity.
