Real Life Nickname Stretch
Miriam has a classmate named Alizabeth. When I first saw the name I inwardly groaned, now that I know why they chose the spelling I groaned out loud. Alizabeth goes by Ali. They wanted to call her Ali but wanted a formal name. I guess they didn't like Alison, Alice, or Alexandra.

Do you know that's why they chose Alizabeth for certain? I mean, there are so many variants of Elizabeth, and this one's not that unusual so....

Yeah, I'd assume they wanted to call her Aliza. I mean, I don't think it's that bad. I actually think it looks kind of cool (Elizabeth's never been my favorite name and I tend to think of it as quite boring, plus I like A names in general so that helps). At least they only changed one aspect of the spelling! It's not Alyzibeth or something. So I don't hate the spelling change, but I'm with you on the nickname. There's a host of other names they could've gone with, so they must've liked "Elizabeth" more if they went with that because it's really not a natural leap. You don't pron. Alizabeth with an 'ah' as in 'cat' and you don't pron. Ali (which I always read as ah-LEE, btw so that irks me right there) with a schewa 'uh' or 'eh' as in Elizabeth whichever way you pronounce it. Sorry, preaching to the choir, I'll stop! LOL It could be way worse though.

A definite stretch! And a lifetime of inconvenience ahead. But all I thought of was: you see her for the first time, and think 'That's Alizabeth'; see her again and thing 'There goes Thelizabeth'.

It's not a stretch though. It's right there and makes perfect sense as a nickname. I know changing the spelling on anything is a terrible sin on BTN but it's really not that big of a deal.A stretch would be like, "We named her Emmaline but call her Ali because look, it's got -ali- in the middle there!"

Agree! The stretches some people make in this board for hypothetical children make this one look tame.Yes, it'll get a bit confusing spelling out Alizabeth every time, but it's not any wilder than other names I see.

True. But I just feel for the kid having to constantly correct the spelling.

I think at least having to always say "Elizabeth with an A" is a lot less of an effort than a lot of kids have to go through, spelling the whole thing out every time.

For my own - I say the same thing - Barbra - spelled as the famous singer / celebrity Barbra Streisand spells it. I still (vaguely) long to add Elizabeth to my name since the occasion that it was erroneously added on legal documents in lieu of my first name. I didn't think much of it at the time - but the name bears so much heritage, and with so many independent nicknames - there is "so much that can be done with the name".

Yeah ditto that! Elizabeth with an A isn't that bad. In my head it sounds slightly different.I have 3 Caitlin's in one of my classes and 3 Ashley's and all of them are spelt differently.. so much more complicated.

Alizabeth still looks kinda dumb to me, though. Also there are zillions of Al/Ali names for girls if they were so set on that nickname.

Exactly my point.

Wow, honestly they could have just given her an Ali- middle name and then gotten the nickname from there. That's what I would have done.
The name itself isn't so bad though, kinda sounds like it has a foreign lilt to it.
