I know a Nicole who was called Nixie while she was a child. In her teenage years, it just stopped happening - people presumably started to find it inappropriate.
As for Pixie ... ! If your friend enjoys -xie, why wouldn't she go for the Beatrix option? I find Trixie (a) canine and (b) infantile, but at least then her daughter would have a legitimate name to fall back on.
If she does use Pixie, then would her next children be Fairy and Gnome? Or, as in Cold Comfort Farm, Elfine?
