Male, definitely. My first association is with the bombing of Dresden, and that city in general. My second is with the Dresden Files. After having read the other comments, I now remember Dresden china.

The bombing association makes it an extremely gloomy name to me.

I know a 20-something Dresden who is a girl, but I would still assume the toddler would be a boy! I think it's a cute name, but the negative associations would turn me off of it

I think first of the German city, bombed flat in the closing stages of the Second World War: not a very fem association. But then I think of those very delicate porcelain ornaments showing Marie-Antoinette shepherdesses and painted in pastel shades - the most stereotypically feminine items imaginable, but too sweet and in need of a good squeeze of lemon juice.

I would expect a boy to be given the name; not sure why. Personally, I find both possible associations unattractive.

I hope I never have to assume a gender, because it’s a foolish name for a human being. Honestly, it’s completely 50-50 for me. Maybe 51-49 favouring male. If I heard it on the playground, my first thought would probably be to hope somebody brought their dog, and then feel bad for the dog.

I loved the museum in Dresden, but I think it makes a bad name. Dresden is heavily associated with WWII and bombings.

I asked about here it back when I encountered Dresden, and the thing I remember (might misremember) was that someone said it sounded kind of lame because Dresden is touristy now. Dresden herself said that people often told her they were reminded of the firebombing. So it seemed to have a slightly dark and historical vibe because of that. But really I doubt it ever mattered to her, except when people first heard the name and blurted out things they thought were conversation. I don't think it's too terribly different from, say, Berlin as a name.

I would probably assume masculine, but there are feminine names that end with an “en” sounding ending too. But more than anything, the name Dresden immediately makes me think of the band The Dresden Dolls. They’re kind of indie dark cabaret?

I immediately think boy, because the closest sounding name I think of is Desmond, but I wouldn't be that surprised if it was a girl's name.

I'd also put it in the same category as London and Berlin, since it's primarily a city: sounds industrial. And it seems geeky, maybe about like Dexter.

It also reminds me of the Dresden Dolls, which was a "punk cabaret" duo/band.

I would assume boy. I knew someone with a little Dresden. He was named after The Dresden Dolls and Harry Dresden from The Dresden Files.

If I met a kid named this, I would assume the parents were neo-Nazis. Seriously, I've been on Stormfront baby name threads, they're fans. I don't otherwise see an appeal.

Dresden sounds masculine, but I associate more with the German city than as a person's name.

I would GREATLY assume boy. I can't say I care much for the name itself. Sounds better as a surname.
