Re: This or that? (Names from my PNL)
in reply to a message by Uilos
Ada or Edith? - Edith. Cool, long history, MUCH less flabby.
Aina or Elsa? - Elsa, cos lions.
Alice or Alix or Alys? - Alice all the way. Alix looks like a spelling mistake and Alys looks over-elaborate.
Cosima or Elvira or Ursula? - Probably Ursula, but only as a mn.
Dagmar or Olga? - Dagmar! Olga sounds like a cough.
Eleonora or Isadora or Theodora? - Theodora, but only because Eleanor isn't an option. Isadora is awful.
Elisabeth or Ester? - Elisabeth. I prefer it with a z, but Ester is too medical.
Helena or Ilona? - Helena, so I could use Helen as a permanent nn. Dislike the lone in Ilona.
Jane or Mary? - Both! Equally nice, equally usable. I used Mary as a mn for my daughter, so OK, Mary.
Josephine or Persephone? - Josephine. Everyone can pronounce it.
Juliana or Lavinia or Minerva? - Lavinia is too lavatorial and Minerva is (a) over-ambitious and (b) would degenerate into Minnie. So, Juliana, though the only Juli- name I like is Juliet!
Salome or Zénaïde? - Salome, because I could use Sally as a nn.
Saskia or Sylvia? - Sylvia is more English and the meaning is lovely. Saskia is too close to the name of a local flour mill.
Vanamo or Vellamo? - Neither. They both look unattractive, and I've got no context for them.Alfons / Alphonse or Alfred? - Alfred. At least the poor boy could be Fred.
Andrei or Nikolai? - Nikolai. All versions of Andrew are over-used and boring.
Casimir / Kasimir or Constantin / Konstantin? - Constantin, though I'd prefer Constantine.
Frederick or Henry? - Frederick, any day. Henry is feeble and dated and dull.
Gustaf / Gustav or Svante? - Gustav with a v preferably. I have no context for Svante.
Javier or Johannes? - Johannes. No pronunciation issues, and it shortens pleasantly to Johan.
Kaspar or Oskar? - Oskar, to avoid the cartoon ghost, however friendly.
Tapio or Untamo? - Once again, no context = no vote.
