Well, a Verruca is a wart or a wartlike projection, as on the back of a toad or on some leaves. Maybe, it was taken from that or is a variant of Veronica?

Considering...Considering Roald Dahl's sense of humour, that's more than likely correct. The name Veruca is associated with Veruca Salt, one of the nasty children in the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. She is a spoiled brat who eventually is declared a "bad egg" and is sent to the furnace. (There's also a band named Veruca Salt, after the character.)Array

Dahl actually makes reference to the type of wart in the book :-)

Could it be a pet form of Veronica or of Vera?

Check the dictionary; I can't quite remember the definition, but it was unpleasant. It was the name of a Roald Dahl character in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a bratty little girl.
