Possibly the name is a female version of "Macedon", meaning "Macedonian". Macedonia is a region in northern Greece (parts of historical MAcedonia are in modern-day FYROM and Bulgaria). The Macedonian empire of Alexander spread Hellenism all the way to India. Actually the last military victory set in Afghanistan was by Alexander; quite a precedent for Bush and Blair to meet :)
